Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The tension in the small hospital room became so thick it was suffocating.

Julian turned, finally noticing Nathan standing near the sofa. Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, recognizing the high-profile hotel mogul immediately.

"Nathan Caldwell," Julian said, his voice cool and guarded.

"Julian," Nathan replied, stepping forward, his frame rigid, his hands clenched into fists in his pockets. "I didn't realize you were involved in Claire’s life."

"Julian is my business partner, Nathan," Claire said quickly, picking up on the dark, dangerous energy radiating from her ex-husband. "He co-founded the art authentication firm with me in Boston."

"Business partner?" Nathan repeated, a sharp, sarcastic bite in his voice. "He drove five hours through a blinding snowstorm from Boston because your business partner's baby had a fever?"

Julian stepped between Nathan and Claire, his jaw set. "I drove through a storm because Claire and Lily are the most important people in my life. And who I am to them is none of your concern, Caldwell. From what I recall, you signed away your right to care about Claire fourteen months ago."

"Julian, please," Claire intervened, placing a hand on Julian’s forearm. "Nathan drove us here through the storm. He saved Lily. If it wasn't for him, we would have been trapped at his parents' house."

Julian paused, his aggressive posture softening slightly as he looked at Nathan. He let out a long breath. "Then I owe you a debt of gratitude, Nathan. Thank you for protecting them."

Nathan felt a bitter, toxic jealousy burning in his gut. He hated that Julian was calling them "them"—grouping Claire and Lily together as if they belonged to him. He hated that Julian looked at Claire with such fierce, protective devotion.

"I'm going to step outside," Nathan said curtly, unable to breathe the same air as them for another second. "The hospital discharge papers should be ready soon. My driver will take you back to my parents' house whenever you're ready."

"We won't be needing your driver," Julian said calmly. "I have my truck outside. I’ll take Claire and Lily home."

Nathan glared at Julian, then looked at Claire. Claire looked at him with an expression of deep sadness and helplessness.

Nathan turned on his heel and walked out of the room, the heavy door slamming shut behind him.

He walked fast down the sterile hospital corridor, his mind a chaotic storm of rage, hurt, and self-loathing. All the progress they had made an hour ago—the raw confessions, the soft tender moments—felt like a delusion. Claire had moved on. She had built a life with Julian Vance.

Nathan walked out of the hospital lobby and stood in the freezing evening air, letting the cold wind bite his face.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a text from his sister, Molly:

Serena packed her bags and took an Uber to the train station an hour ago. She’s gone. Mom is frantic about Lily. How is she?

Nathan typed back: Lily is fine. They’re being discharged soon.

He stared at his phone, feeling utterly hollow. Serena was gone. Claire was with another man. His grand house in Greenwich was empty of the life he had secretly longed for. He had everything money could buy—hotels, sports cars, international fame—and he had never felt poorer.

Determined not to give up, Nathan pulled up his contacts and made a call to his head of private intelligence—a man who handled high-level corporate security for his hotel chain.

"Mark," Nathan said, his voice cold and commanding. "I need a complete background check on Julian Vance. His relationship with my ex-wife, his financial standing, and his connection to her child. I want it on my desk by tomorrow morning."

"You got it, Mr. Caldwell," the voice replied.

Nathan ended the call. He wasn't going to walk away quietly. Not this time.
