Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass

By late afternoon, the storm had quieted into a gentle, steady snowfall. Lily was fast asleep in a private hospital room, her temperature back to normal, wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Nathan returned from the cafeteria holding two paper cups of hot tea. He handed one to Claire, who was sitting in a rocking chair beside the crib.

"Thank you," Claire whispered, her voice raspy. She took a sip, letting the warmth spread through her hands. "For everything, Nathan. For driving through that storm. You saved her."

"I did what anyone would do," Nathan said, sitting down on the small vinyl sofa across from her.

"No," Claire said softly, looking at him intently. "Serena wouldn't have. Most people wouldn't have risked their lives in a blizzard for someone else's child."

Nathan looked down at his hands. "When I saw how terrified you were... nothing else mattered. I didn't care about the storm. I didn't care about Serena."

Claire was silent for a moment. "Where is Serena?"

"She left," Nathan said simply. "Or rather, she’s packing her bags at my parents' house right now. We broke up before I opened the front door."

Claire blinked, stunned. "Nathan... I’m sorry. I didn't mean to come into your life and ruin your relationship."

Nathan let out a short, humorless laugh. "You didn't ruin anything, Claire. You just forced me to look at the mirror. Serena and I... we weren't in love. We were business partners wearing romantic titles. She fit my image. She looked good at hotel launch parties. But when real life happened—when a child was sick—she showed me exactly who she was. And more importantly, the situation showed me who I had become."

Claire looked at him, surprised by his self-awareness. During their marriage, Nathan had rarely admitted weakness, let alone fault.

"I was a terrible husband to you, Claire," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a quiet, raw confession. "Sitting here today, watching you fight for Lily... I realized how much I took from you. I took your time. I took your career opportunities. I starved you of emotional real estate because I was so obsessed with building my own empire."

"Nathan, you don't have to do this—"

"No, I do," Nathan insisted, looking her dead in the eye. "I spent the last fourteen months telling myself that our divorce was just a mutual incompatibility. But it wasn't. You left because I was draining the life out of you. I invited you to Christmas Eve because I wanted to prove I was doing great without you. I was arrogant. And then you walked in with Lily... and I realized you had created something beautiful, while I was just accumulating things."

Claire felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time it wasn't from fear or grief. It was from the overwhelming relief of finally being heard. For years, she had felt gaslit by his busyness, made to feel guilty for wanting a deeper, simpler connection. Hearing him validate her pain was a heavy, healing medicine.

"Thank you for saying that," Claire whispered.

Before Nathan could speak again, the door to the room swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, strikingly handsome man in an expensive wool coat, his dark hair dusted with snow. He carried a heavy leather overnight bag and looked frantic.

"Claire!" the man called out, rushing into the room.

Nathan immediately stood up, his posture instantly stiffening into protective hostility.

Claire looked up, her eyes widening in absolute shock. "Julian? What are you doing here?"

Julian rushed to the side of the crib, checking on Lily with frantic concern before turning to Claire, taking her face in his hands. "Your sister called me and said Lily was rushed to the hospital! The roads were blocked, so I rented an all-wheel-drive truck and drove straight from Boston! Is she okay? Is Lily alright?"

Nathan felt a sudden, ice-cold blade plunge into his heart.

He watched the intimate way this handsome stranger held Claire’s face. He saw the sheer panic in the man’s eyes—the panic of a father.

Julian.

Nathan calculated in his mind. Julian was Julian Vance—one of Boston’s most prominent art restoration magnates, a billionaire philanthropist, and a man Claire had worked with briefly during their marriage.

Nathan stared at the man, a sickening realization washing over him.

This is the father, Nathan thought, his world spinning. She lied to everyone. Lily isn't from an anonymous donor. She belongs to him.
