Chapter 10 - The Garden of Tomorrow

One year later. Christmas Eve.

The snow fell gently outside the grand stone house in Greenwich, clinging to the pine branches and dusting the wide lawn in pure white.

Inside, the warm glow of a massive fireplace illuminated the living room. A tall, magnificent pine tree stood by the window, decorated with handmade ornaments and soft gold lights.

Laughter filled the air. Diane and Walter were sitting on the plush sofa, watching sixteen-month-old Lily—now walking steadily on her chubby legs—toddle across the rug holding a plush reindeer.

"Catch her, Nathan!" Molly laughed, taking a video on her phone.

Nathan, wearing a cozy green sweater and jeans, swooped in with a dramatic laugh, scooping Lily up into his arms and swinging her through the air. Lily erupted into high-pitched, joyous squeals, clutching Nathan’s hair with her tiny hands.

"Gotcha!" Nathan laughed, kissing her chubby cheek before settling her comfortably on his hip.

Claire walked out of the kitchen holding a tray of hot chocolate. She wore a simple white dress, her auburn hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. She looked at Nathan holding Lily, her face filled with an overwhelming, radiant peace.

Nathan walked over to her, putting an arm around her waist and leaning down to kiss her forehead.

"Everything ready?" Nathan asked softly.

"Everything is perfect," Claire replied, smiling up at him.

There had been no grand, loud corporate wedding. Six months ago, in a quiet, sunlit garden behind their home, Nathan and Claire had renewed their vows in front of just eight people. No press, no business partners—just true family.

Nathan set Lily down on the play mat near the tree, where she immediately began playing with a wooden block set.

Nathan wrapped both arms around Claire from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they both watched their daughter play.

"Do you remember two years ago tonight?" Nathan whispered in her ear.

Claire giggled softly, leaning back against his chest. "How could I forget? You opened the door looking like you wanted to execute me, and I walked in carrying an uninvited baby."

"I was an idiot," Nathan admitted, smiling against her neck. "I thought I was inviting you to prove I didn't need you. I had no idea you were coming to give me my life back."

Claire turned in his arms, facing him, her hazel eyes bright with deep affection. She placed her hands flat against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.

"You saved us in that storm, Nathan," Claire said softly. "And you spent every day since proving that you belong here."

"I belong to you," Nathan declared, his voice thick with emotion. "To you, and to Lily. Forever."

Outside, the snow continued to fall softly over the sleeping town, cold and quiet. But inside the house, surrounded by the warmth of family, forgiveness, and new beginnings, Nathan and Claire pulled each other close and shared a quiet, perfect Christmas kiss.

The life they had lost was gone, but the life they had built together was finally, beautifully complete.
