Chapter 6 - Unraveling Threads

By the next afternoon, the blizzard had passed, leaving Greenwich under a blinding blanket of white sun. The snowplows had cleared the roads, and life was returning to normal.

In his private office at the Caldwell corporate headquarters in Manhattan, Nathan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a thick manila folder.

Mark, his head of security, stood quietly on the other side of the desk.

"Read it," Mark said softly. "It’s not what you think, boss."

Nathan opened the file, his eyes scanning the dense pages of financial records, medical documents, and legal affidavits. As he read, his mouth went dry.

"Julian Vance isn't the father," Nathan whispered, his hand trembling slightly.

"No," Mark confirmed. "Julian Vance is gay, Mr. Caldwell. He’s been in a committed, quiet relationship with a gallery owner in London for eight years. He and Mrs. Caldwell are strictly business partners and best friends. He funded her authentication firm because he believed in her talent."

Nathan stared at the paper. "Then... the baby?"

"The medical records from the Boston fertility clinic are right there on page four," Mark said. "Mrs. Caldwell used a fully anonymous donor from an international bank. The process was started thirteen months ago."

Nathan turned to page four. His eyes traced the clinical text: Patient: Claire Bennett. Procedure: In-Vitro Fertilization. Donor #8492.

And then, lower down on the page, under the section labeled Medical History & Compatibility Analysis, Nathan’s heart stopped beating.

His vision blurred. He read the lines once, twice, three times.

Donor Genetics: Matched for specific rare blood antibodies. Cross-referenced with prior pregnancy records (2022).

Nathan dropped the folder onto the desk. "Prior pregnancy?" he whispered, his voice choking. "What prior pregnancy?"

Mark hesitated, looking at Nathan with genuine pity. "Mr. Caldwell... three years ago, while you were in the middle of opening the Dubai property, Mrs. Caldwell was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital."

Nathan’s mind raced back to 2023. Three years ago.

That was the year he was gone for four months straight, managing the chaotic, high-stakes launch of his flagship Middle Eastern resort. He remembered Claire telling him she was feeling sick with the flu, telling him not to fly home because he was too busy. He remembered sending her flowers and continuing his meetings.

"She had a miscarriage," Mark said gently. "She was ten weeks pregnant with your child. She checked into the hospital alone, went through the procedure alone, and never told you."

Nathan felt the world tilt on its axis. The blood roared in his ears.

A miscarriage.

She had been carrying his baby. And she had gone through the nightmare of losing it completely alone in a cold hospital room while he was sipping champagne with investors six thousand miles away.

Nathan buried his face in his hands, a jagged, violent sob ripping from his chest.

Now he understood. Now every single piece of the puzzle fell into place.

Why she had refused to talk about kids afterward. Why she had looked at him with such quiet detachment during the final year of their marriage. Why she had chosen an anonymous donor to have Lily.

She hadn't fallen out of love with the idea of a family. She had been broken by the fact that he was never there when she needed him most.
