Chapter 8 - The Boardroom

Two days later, the glass-walled executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of the Vale Meridian Tower offered a panoramic view of the bustling Boston financial district.
Seated around the long walnut conference table were twelve managing directors, senior partners, and institutional investors who controlled billions in global capital. When the heavy double doors opened and I walked in, flanked by Lena and my security detail, every person at the table stood up instantly in unison.
I walked to the head of the table, resting my hands lightly on the back of the high-backed leather chair. My post-partum recovery was proceeding smoothly, supported by top-tier medical care, and my mind was sharper and more focused than it had ever been.
“Please, sit,” I said.
The board members took their seats with quiet precision.
“Thank you all for convening on such short notice,” I began, my voice clear and authoritative, echoing off the acoustic panels of the room. “As you are aware, Vale Meridian recently executed a routine internal audit of our regional subsidiaries, specifically targeting Apex Financial. That audit uncovered a systemic breach of fiduciary duty by former Senior Vice President Daniel Cole.”
I clicked a remote on the table, projecting a detailed financial breakdown onto the massive smart-screen behind me.
“Mr. Cole utilized his corporate position to embezzle corporate funds, falsify asset registries, and attempt unauthorized encumbrances on company-held real estate. Those funds have already been fully recovered through our asset forfeiture protocols. Furthermore, the individual in question is currently facing felony prosecution and will never work in corporate finance again.”
A murmur of approval rippled around the table. Richard Sterling—the former head of Apex who had covered for Daniel—was already facing federal indictment, and his seat at the table had been permanently dissolved.
“Moving forward,” I continued, leaning slightly forward, “Apex Financial will be absorbed directly into Vale Meridian’s core asset management division, operating under direct oversight from my office. We will implement AI-driven compliance monitoring across all subsidiaries to ensure that no individual—regardless of title or personal connection—can ever exploit our corporate infrastructure again.”
Arthur Vance, senior managing partner of our international division, raised his hand respectfully. “Madam CEO, what about the domestic fallout? The tabloids have attempted to sensationalize the personal aspects of the investigation.”

I met his gaze steadily.
“Let them write what they want,” I said. “A company is only as strong as its foundation. And an empire is only as secure as the person who builds it. We do not negotiate with parasites, and we do not apologize for protecting our assets.”
