Chapter 10 - The Unconquered Peak

Six months later, the private gardens of Estate 9 were in full bloom.
The spring sun warmed the stone patio where two six-month-old infants—Emma and Noah—sat propped up in custom ergonomic play-seats, giggling and batting at golden rattles bearing the subtle, elegant crest of Vale Meridian.
I stood at the edge of the infinity pool, looking out over the expansive, flawless grounds that stretched down to the private security gates. The estate was more than just a home; it was a fortress, a sanctuary, and a monument to absolute independence.
Lena walked up beside me, holding a tablet displaying the quarterly global market reports.
“Apex Financial has fully integrated into the core holdings, Madam CEO,” Lena reported with a quiet smile. “Revenue is up eighteen percent, and our new sustainable design subsidiary—Lark & Cole—has just secured exclusive contracts across three continents.”
I smiled, looking down at the name on the corporate brief. I had reclaimed my maiden name as my primary legal identifier across all global holdings, completely severing the last nominal ties to the man who had tried to destroy me.
“And the trial?” I asked.
“Daniel’s plea negotiations concluded this morning,” Lena replied smoothly. “Six years in federal custody with no possibility of parole, followed by full restitution seized from his mother’s undisclosed real estate holdings. Denise has been forced to downsize into a modest studio apartment outside Worcester.”
I took a sip of iced tea, feeling the warm breeze rustle through my hair.
Behind me, Emma let out a bright, joyful squeal, and Noah laughed in response. I turned away from the edge of the pool, walking back across the sunlit stone patio to scoop both of my children into my arms. They buried their little faces against my neck, warm, safe, and fiercely protected.

They thought I was a poor, helpless designer they could discard like trash.
What they never understood was that when you own the ground they walk on, the air they breathe, and the system that holds them up, you never have to beg for a place in the world. You simply build the world yourself.
