Chapter 6 - The Exit

The walk down the long, snow-swept driveway was a fitting metaphor for their lives: cold, exposed, and entirely devoid of warmth.

Daniel walked first, his designer suit jacket pulled tight against the freezing wind, his head bowed as the swirling snow plastered his hair to his forehead. Behind him stumbled Denise, wrapped in a cheap wool blanket provided by the security team, her high heels sinking uselessly into the wet slush. Celeste brought up the rear, sobbing hysterically as she tried to shield her blowout from the blizzard with a Gucci handbag that was now functionally worthless.

I stood on the heated stone portico, watching them go.

At the outer security gate, a standard white transit van with black tinted windows sat idling, its amber hazards blinking rhythmically against the dark night. A uniformed driver held the rear doors open.

Daniel stopped at the threshold of the van, turning back one last time to look up at the towering mansion. The warm light spilling from the foyer illuminated the imposing architecture, the sprawling slate roof, and the towering glass windows that overlooked the estate. It was a monument to wealth, power, and absolute dominion—and he had lived inside it for three years without ever realizing he was merely a guest in my world.

“Mara!” Daniel shouted over the roar of the wind, his voice cracking with desperate grief. “Please! We have history! Think of our vows!”

“My vows included loyalty, honesty, and mutual respect,” I called back, my voice carrying clearly across the snow-covered grounds. “You violated every single one of them the moment you decided to treat me like trash.”

He climbed slowly into the back of the van. Denise followed, muttering curses under her breath, before Celeste scrambled in beside them. The doors slammed shut with a heavy, final thud.

The transit van turned around in the wide turnaround circle, its tires crunching over the frozen gravel, and disappeared down the winding road toward Exit 14 and the Comfort Inn.

I stood on the portico for a long moment, watching the tail lights fade into the white void of the blizzard.

“Madam CEO,” Lena said softly, stepping up beside me and offering a fresh, warm cup of herbal tea. “The federal investigators are currently securing the Apex Financial servers downtown. By morning, the board will have ratified your emergency restructuring plan.”

I took the cup, letting the warmth seep into my cold fingers. I looked down at Noah, who stirred slightly against my chest, letting out a soft, contented sigh in his sleep.

“Good,” I said, taking a sip. “Let’s begin.”
