Chapter 7 - The Morning After

The morning sun rose over Boston like a cold blade of light, cutting across the snow-covered peaks of the Back Bay and casting a brilliant, blinding glare over the manicured lawns of Estate 9.
Inside the master suite—now restored to its proper configuration under my personal biometric profile—the room was bathed in golden morning light. Emma and Noah lay side-by-side in their custom oak cribs, sleeping peacefully beneath a mobile of hand-blown glass stars.
I sat at the mahogany executive desk in the corner of the room, sipping black coffee while reviewing the initial forensic audit reports transmitted directly from Vale Meridian’s central mainframe.
The findings were even worse than anticipated. Over the past three years, Daniel had systematically funneled nearly 2.4 million dollars of corporate subsidiary funds into personal offshore accounts, using a network of fake consulting contracts and shell companies managed by an old college buddy. Furthermore, he had attempted to quietly leverage the equity of the estate—which he falsely claimed to own—to secure a speculative real estate venture in Miami.
My phone chimed softly on the desk. It was an encrypted message from the District Attorney’s financial crimes division.
“Warrants executed at 06:00. Daniel Cole taken into custody during traffic stop outside Comfort Inn. Assets frozen. Full cooperation granted.”
I locked the screen and set the phone down. There was no sense of triumph, no hollow thrill of revenge. Just the quiet, immovable satisfaction of a system correcting an error.
The bedroom door clicked open, and Lena walked in, holding a sleek black tablet and a fresh espresso.
“Good morning, Madam CEO,” Lena said with a respectful nod. “The financial news outlets are already picking up the story. Apex Financial issued an emergency press release an hour ago announcing the immediate termination of Daniel Cole for gross financial misconduct and fiduciary fraud.”
“How is the market reacting?” I asked, not looking up from my screen.

“Vale Meridian’s stock opened up four points,” Lena replied, a faint smile touching her lips. “Wall Street loves swift, decisive governance. As for your ex-husband, his defense attorney has already tried to contact our legal department three times this morning, offering a full confession in exchange for reduced bail.”
“Tell them the legal department does not negotiate with corporate embezzlers,” I said calmly. “Let him experience the reality of having no job, no money, and no safety net. Exactly as he wished for me.”
