Chapter 9 - The Heart of a Father

The sound of a steady, rhythmic beep filled the quiet room.

Beep... beep... beep...

Arthur Whitmore slowly opened his eyes.

The blinding light of a clean, white room washed over him. He smelled antiseptic, fresh flowers, and clean linen. He was lying in a private suite at the Massachusetts General Hospital, hooked up to heart monitors and intravenous lines.

Standing beside his bed was a renowned cardiac surgeon, Dr. Eleanor Vance, checking his vital signs with a gentle smile.

"Welcome back, Professor," Dr. Vance said softly. "You gave us quite a scare."

"The... the girls..." Arthur rasped, his voice barely a whisper.

"They are right outside," a strong voice answered from the doorway.

Clara walked into the room, holding two large cups of coffee. She looked tired, but her face was beaming with profound relief and satisfaction.

"Harrison Sterling is currently sitting in a federal holding cell without bail," Clara reported, leaning against the bed rail. "The Federal Court validated Julian's will three hours ago. Nell and Nora are officially the sole owners of Sterling Global Enterprises."

"And... Harrison's men?" Arthur asked softly.

"All arrested. The entire corrupt board of directors has been ousted. The company is currently being managed by a court-appointed independent trust until the girls come of age."

Clara leaned closer, her eyes turning soft. "And the court has already approved the temporary guardianship papers, Arthur. Once you're released from the hospital, you are officially their legal guardian."

Arthur’s eyes filled with warm tears. He swallowed hard, trying to speak, but the emotional weight in his throat made it impossible.

"And there's one more thing," Dr. Vance added, stepping forward. "Your surgery was a complete success, Arthur."

Arthur frowned slightly. "Surgery?"

"A double heart bypass and a valve replacement," Clara explained with a grin. "Paid for in advance by the Sterling Estate’s medical foundation. You have the heart of a thirty-year-old now, Professor. You're going to be around to see those girls graduate from college."

The door to the hospital room pushed open softly.

Nell and Nora walked into the room, wearing warm, brand-new woolen sweaters. Nell was holding a large, hand-drawn card made of construction paper, while Nora was carrying a plush brown teddy bear.

They stopped at the side of his bed, looking at Arthur with wide, glowing eyes.

"Arthur?" Nora whispered. "Are you fixed now?"

Arthur smiled—a deep, joyful smile that reached every corner of his soul. He held out his arms to them.

"I am fixed, Nora," Arthur said softly. "I've never been better."

Nell and Nora climbed carefully onto the edge of the large hospital bed, burying their faces into his chest, holding him with all the love and strength their small bodies possessed.

Arthur wrapped his arms around both of his daughters, resting his chin against their soft hair, watching the bright morning sun pour through the hospital window, casting golden light across the room.
