Chapter 5 - The Journey South

At 4:00 AM, while the forest was still wrapped in pitch-black darkness and freezing winds, Clara woke the household.

She had spent the last three hours preparing for their departure. Outside the cabin, hidden beneath a blue tarp behind the woodpile, sat a thirty-year-old green Ford F-250 pickup truck with four-wheel drive, heavy snow tires, and a reinforced steel snowplow attached to the front bumper.

"The main highways will be monitored by Harrison's private security network," Clara explained as she loaded two heavy duffel bags into the truck's cab. "He has access to regional traffic cameras and state police radio bands. We are taking the old logging routes through Vermont down into Massachusetts."

She handed Arthur a small leather holster containing a snub-nosed .38 revolver.

"I know you're a pacifist history professor, Arthur," Clara said firmly, shutting the truck door. "But if Harrison's mercenaries find us on the road, you won't have time to teach them a history lesson. Keep it in your coat."

Arthur looked at the cold steel of the weapon, feeling its heavy weight. He nodded slowly, sliding the holster into his inner pocket. "I understand."

They loaded Nell and Nora into the rear bench seat of the truck, wrapping them in heavy wool blankets and giving them thermos bottles filled with warm cocoa.

Clara took the driver’s seat, cranked the heavy V8 engine to life with a loud, throaty roar, and backed the truck out onto the unplowed forest track.

The journey south was a nightmare of snow, ice, and blinding fog.

Clara drove with masterclass skill, navigating narrow dirt roads lined with steep cliffs and fallen pine branches. For four hours, the only sound was the deep rumble of the engine, the slap of the windshield wipers against thick snow, and the soft, rhythmic breathing of the girls sleeping in the back seat.

As dawn broke over the Berkshire mountains, casting a pale, lavender light across the snow-covered landscape, they hit the outskirts of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Clara suddenly tapped the brakes, slowing the heavy truck to a crawl.

"Arthur," she murmured, her eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. "Look back. Two miles behind us."

Arthur turned in his seat, looking through the rear window.

Following two miles behind them on the deserted, snow-covered two-lane highway was a pair of sleek, black SUVs with dark tinted windows and high-intensity LED headlights cutting through the morning mist.

"Is it Harrison?" Arthur asked, his pulse accelerating.

"He traced my license plate," Clara growled, slamming her foot down onto the accelerator. "He must have had a regional tracker scanning for my truck’s registration the moment we crossed the state line. Hold on!"

The heavy Ford truck surged forward, its powerful engine screaming as Clara accelerated to seventy miles per hour down the winding, icy mountain road.

Behind them, the two black SUVs accelerated rapidly, closing the distance with terrifying speed.

"Nora! Nell! Get down on the floor!" Arthur yelled, reaching back to push the girls down beneath the wool blankets.

The lead SUV pulled up alongside the left side of the truck. The front passenger window rolled down, revealing an enforcer holding a heavy pneumatic window-shatterer aimed directly at Clara’s side glass.

"Hang on to your teeth!" Clara roared.

Instead of braking, Clara yanked the heavy steering wheel sharply to the left.

CRASH!

The heavy steel snowplow on the front of Clara’s truck slammed straight into the side doors of the SUV with massive force. The smaller vehicle spun violently on the black ice, its tires screaming as it slammed through the wooden guardrail and plunged down the thirty-foot snow-covered embankment, rolling twice before crashing into a grove of birch trees.

"One down!" Clara yelled, straightening the wheel as the Ford fishtailed across the icy road.

But the second SUV was right behind them, its front bumper ramming hard into the truck’s rear tailgate.

BANG!

"He’s trying to pit-maneuver us!" Arthur shouted.

"Not today, you corporate bastard!" Clara snarled.

She slammed on the heavy brakes for half a second. The trailing SUV, caught completely off guard by the sudden stop, slammed at sixty miles per hour straight into the steel tow hitch of the heavy Ford. The SUV's radiator exploded in a cloud of blinding white steam, its hood buckling like an accordion.

Clara slammed the gas again, leaving the smoking wreck of the second SUV crippled in the middle of the highway as the Ford tore down the road toward the Boston turnpike.

Arthur collapsed back into his seat, breathing heavily, his hand pressed firmly against his chest over his racing heart.

In the back seat, Nell lifted her head out from beneath the blankets, looking at Arthur with wide, glowing eyes.

"Clara is very cool," Nell whispered.

Clara let out a grim, triumphant chuckle. "Tell your sister to remember that when she’s running a sixty-billion-dollar company, little one."
