Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Spring

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in full, glorious bloom across the rolling green hills of the Berkshire Mountains.

The winter snows had melted away, replaced by carpet fields of wildflowers, blooming apple orchards, and the warm, sweet scent of fresh pine needles drifting on the gentle mountain breeze.

At the end of a quiet, private lane sat a beautiful, renovated historic estate surrounded by ancient oak trees, a sparkling blue pond, and broad wooden porches overlooking the valley.

In the front garden, seven-year-old Nell and Nora were running through the green grass, playing tag with a golden retriever puppy that Clara had bought for them the month before. Their laughter echoed across the quiet valley like music.

On the wide wooden porch, sitting in a comfortable rocking chair with a cup of hot tea in his hand, sat Arthur Whitmore.

He looked vibrant, healthy, and full of life. His cheeks had color, his eyes were bright, and the heavy burden of loneliness that had defined his forty-two years was gone forever.

Beside him sat Clara, reading the morning edition of the Boston Globe.

"Look at this," Clara smiled, gesturing to the front-page article. "The Sterling Foundation just broke ground on a new pediatric hospital in downtown Boston. Named the 'Arthur Whitmore Children’s Center.'"

Arthur chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I told the board of trustees that was unnecessary."

"Nonsense," Clara barked happily. "It was Nell's personal decision. And as the chief shareholder, nobody argues with Nell."

Below the porch, Nell caught the puppy in her arms, both girls tumbling gently onto the soft grass, laughing hysterically as the puppy licked their faces.

Nell looked up toward the porch, catching Arthur’s eye. She stood up, grabbed Nora’s hand, and both girls ran up the wooden steps, throwing themselves into Arthur’s lap.

Arthur wrapped his arms around his twin daughters, pulling them close against his warm, healthy chest.

"Arthur?" Nell asked, looking up into his face with her large, clear brown eyes.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we going to stay here forever?"

Arthur looked out over the sunlit valley, at the blooming orchards, at the peaceful home they had built together out of the storm, and then down into the happy, loving faces of his daughters.

"Yes, Nell," Arthur promised softly, kissing the tops of their heads. "We are staying right here. For as long as you need."

May you like

"Forever then," Nora giggled, burying her face into his sweater.

"Forever," Arthur whispered, holding them tight as the warm spring sun bathed their home in an unbroken, eternal light.
