Chapter 7 - The Master Key

The private vault room was lined with walls of polished brass and walnut paneling.
In the center of the room sat a massive steel deposit box, six feet tall, bearing the number 408 in gold leafing.
Nell walked up to the box. She pulled the brass key from around her neck, her small hands steady despite the gravity of the moment. She inserted the heavy key into the lower keyhole and turned it to the right.
CLACK.
A mechanical panel on the front of the box slid back, revealing a glowing digital glass screen.
"Biometric secondary verification," Clara noted.
Nell looked at Arthur. "What do I do?"
"Place your hand on the glass, sweetheart," Arthur said gently.
Nell pressed her small palm flat against the glowing glass. A soft green laser swept across her skin, scanning her DNA, her palm print, and her retinal reflection.
A soft, synthesized chime echoed through the silent room.
"Welcome, Nell Sterling. Master File Access Granted."
The heavy steel door of Vault 408 swung open with a whisper.
Inside sat a thick, leather-bound folder bearing the crest of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, alongside a encrypted black satellite drive and a handwritten letter sealed with red wax.
Arthur reached inside, gently taking the letter. Written on the envelope in elegant script were the words: To Whoever Saved My Daughters.
Arthur broke the seal and unfolded the parchment. He read the words aloud, his voice trembling with emotion:
"If you are reading this, I am dead, and my brother Harrison has attempted to seize what belongs to my children. Inside this drive is complete video, audio, and financial evidence proving that Harrison embezzled three hundred million dollars from Sterling Global and ordered the hit on my family. Furthermore, this folder contains my irrevocable Last Will and Testament, naming my daughters Nell and Nora as sole owners of my estate, and appointing their legal guardian as the sole trustee."
Arthur stopped reading. His eyes drifted to the bottom of the page, where a postscript was written in hurried ink:
"To the person who holds my daughters' hands while reading this: I leave them in your care. You are their father now. Protect them."
Tears welled in Arthur’s eyes. He looked down at Nell and Nora, who were watching him with profound, trusting affection.
Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the vault room behind them slammed shut with a deafening BOOM!
The lights flickered, turning into a harsh, crimson emergency glow.
Over the vault’s intercom system, a familiar, cold voice echoed through the metal room:
"A brilliant effort, Professor Whitmore. Truly inspiring."

Harrison Sterling was standing on the other side of the bulletproof glass, surrounded by eight armed mercenaries and two corporate lawyers. His face was twisted into a triumphant, demonic sneer.
"Did you really think you could outmaneuver me in my own city?" Harrison mocked over the speaker. "You are trapped inside a steel box sixty feet below ground. In ten minutes, I will flood this chamber with industrial halon gas. You will go to sleep, Arthur. And my grandnieces will finally come home to me."
