Chapter 8 - The Confrontation beneath the Earth

The red emergency lights cast long, ominous shadows across the brass walls of the vault.
Inside the sealed room, a soft, dangerous hiss began to blow from the ceiling vents as the halon fire-suppression gas began to seep into the air, displacing the oxygen.
Nora began to cough, clinging tightly to Clara’s leg. "Arthur... it smells funny..."
Clara pulled out her revolver, firing three shots at the bulletproof glass window—
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The heavy lead bullets struck the three-inch reinforced glass, leaving only tiny white spiderweb cracks before falling harmlessly to the carpet floor. Harrison smiled coldly from the other side, straightening his tie.
"It’s useless, Mrs. Vance," Harrison’s voice chuckled over the speaker. "That glass can withstand a grenade blast. You have about four minutes of breathable air remaining."
Arthur stood in the center of the room.
His chest was burning. The physical exertion, the lack of oxygen, and the extreme stress were pushing his failing heart to its absolute limit. His vision blurred at the edges, dark spots swimming before his eyes.
No, Arthur thought, his mind raging against the weakness of his body. Not now. Not when we are ten feet from the finish line.
He looked at the black satellite drive in his hand. Then he looked at the vault’s central control terminal—a high-speed corporate uplink terminal designed for instant international wire transfers.
"Clara!" Arthur shouted over the hiss of the gas. "The terminal! It's connected to the global Sterling network!"
Clara’s eyes lit up. "The encrypted drive has auto-broadcast protocols!"
Arthur rushed to the terminal, jamming the black satellite drive into the master USB port.
Nell stepped up beside him, pressing her small palm against the scanner once more to authorize the system override.
"Master Override Confirmed," the terminal chime announced. "Broadcasting File 'STERLING_JUSTICE_2026' to all global networks, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Securities and Exchange Commission."
On the other side of the glass, Harrison’s smile vanished instantly.
His lead lawyer’s phone began ringing frantically. Then his second lawyer’s phone rang. Then Harrison’s own encrypted phone began buzzing violently in his pocket.
Harrison pulled his phone out. The screen was flooded with high-priority alerts from the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the Department of Justice, and the Board of Directors of Sterling Global Enterprises. The video files, the banking records, and Julian’s signed will were currently being broadcast live on national news networks across the world.
"What did you do?!" Harrison screamed through the speaker, his face turning purple with rage. "WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
"I finished the history lesson, Harrison," Arthur’s voice echoed through the speaker, steady and strong despite his fading lungs.
Outside the glass, heavy footsteps echoed through the sub-basement corridor.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
A tactical breach team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by Boston Police SWAT officers, burst into the vault hallway with weapons drawn.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP TO THE GROUND NOW!" the tactical leader roared.
Harrison’s mercenaries immediately threw their weapons onto the floor, raising their hands in submission. Harrison stood frozen, his eyes wide with absolute horror as two federal marshals slammed him against the bulletproof glass, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
The tactical team leader hit the emergency vault release button on the wall.
The massive steel doors swung open, fresh, clean air rushing into the vault chamber.
Clara, holding Nora, stepped out into the hallway, taking deep breaths of air.
Arthur took two steps toward the exit, holding Nell’s hand—and then his knees buckled.

His chest seized with an excruciating, crushing agony. His vision went completely black, and he collapsed onto the carpeted floor as Nell’s frantic scream echoed through the vault:
"ARTHUR!"
