Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Showdown

The custody hearing was the final act.
Evan showed up in a cheap suit, looking like a man who had lost everything. Rebecca wasn't there—she was out on bail, but under strict orders not to contact me.
The judge looked at the mountain of evidence: the audio recordings of Evan agreeing to the scheme, the documents proving the embezzlement, and the medical records showing my stability.
"Mr. Brooks," the judge said, his voice cold. "You signed a document claiming your wife was unfit, while you were actively conspiring to steal from your own children. Do you have anything to say?"
Evan stuttered. He tried to blame Rebecca. He tried to act like a victim.
"I did what she told me," he whined.
The judge didn't look impressed.

By the end of the day, I had full legal and physical custody. Evan was granted supervised visitation, but only under the condition that he pass drug testing and attend counseling. He had lost his power. He had lost his family.
He looked at me as the gavel fell. For the first time, he saw the woman I had become. He didn't see the wife he could push around. He saw a mother who had fought back and won.
