Chapter 5 - The Physical Toll

The stress was catching up. I was 35 weeks pregnant, and the drama was taking a toll. That evening, as I was sitting at my sister’s dining table, I felt a sharp, liquid pop.
My water had broken.
"Sarah!" I gasped, clutching my stomach as a wave of pain doubled me over.
The rush to the hospital was a blur. The lights, the nurses, the sterile smell—it was all overwhelming. But through the fog of pain, my biggest fear was Evan.
"Don't let them in," I told the triage nurse, my voice trembling. "My husband and his sister... they are not allowed to be in the room. They are not to be told anything."
