Chapter 10 - The New Life

Six months later, I walked into the park with my twins. They were healthy, laughing, and completely unaware of how close they had come to losing their future.

I sat on the bench, watching them play.

Evan was a ghost in our lives. He occasionally showed up for his supervised visits, looking grayer, smaller, more tired. He barely spoke to me. He had learned the hard way that when you push someone too far, you don't just lose them—you lose the world they built for you.

Rebecca was serving a five-year sentence. The boutique was gone. The debt was being handled by the state.

I took a deep breath of fresh air.

I was a single mother. It was hard. It was exhausting. But it was mine.

I opened the savings account app on my phone. The balance was steady. That money wouldn't just pay for their college; it would pay for their freedom.

I leaned back on the bench, feeling the sun on my face. They thought they could break me. They thought I was weak.

They were so, so wrong.

I hadn't just survived. I had rebuilt. And for the first time in my life, the future was entirely, beautifully, mine to define.
