Chapter 8 - The Final Hearing

The courtroom was packed on the morning of the sentencing hearing. Local media outlets had picked up the story—a high-profile corporate executive convicted of domestic battery and embezzlement, alongside the dramatic downfall of his manipulative socialite mother. Reporters sat in the back rows with notebooks and cameras ready.

I sat in the front row, flanked by Marcus Vance and an advocate from the National Domestic Violence Coalition whom I had invited to stand with me. My posture was completely upright, the ache in my ribs now just a dull, distant memory of a healing wound.

When Daniel was led into the courtroom, he looked broken beyond recognition. The orange jumpsuit hung loosely from his frame, his hair was graying prematurely at the temples, and he kept his eyes glued to the polished floorboards, too ashamed to look up at the gallery.

Judge Henderson took her seat, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed the final plea agreement paperwork signed by both parties.

"We are here for the sentencing in the matter of The State versus Daniel Vance," Judge Henderson announced, her voice resonating with grave authority. "The defendant has entered a formal plea of guilty to all charges: felony domestic battery resulting in severe bodily injury, and corporate fraud. Furthermore, the civil restitution settlement has been fully ratified by this court."

Judge Henderson looked down from the bench, locking her stern eyes directly onto Daniel.

"Mr. Vance, do you have anything to say before the court hands down its final judgment?" she asked.

Daniel slowly stood up, his shackles clanking against the floor. He swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he looked up toward the gallery—not at me, but into the empty air.

"I... I take full responsibility," Daniel whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. "I let arrogance, greed, and weakness blind me. I destroyed the best thing that ever happened to me, and I hurt someone who only ever showed me kindness. I deserve everything that is happening to me."

It was a genuine confession, but it came three years too late.

Judge Henderson listened impassive, then nodded slowly. "Mr. Vance, domestic violence and financial abuse are crimes that strike at the very heart of human dignity. The fact that you used your own home as a cage and your own family influence to justify cruelty makes your actions all the more reprehensible."

She paused, lifting her heavy wooden gavel.

"In accordance with the plea agreement and statutory guidelines, this court sentences you to six years in state prison, with no eligibility for parole for the first four years. Additionally, you are ordered to pay full financial restitution in the amount of eighty-five thousand dollars to the victim, Eleanor Vance, alongside a permanent lifetime restraining order."

CRACK.

The gavel struck the sounding block with a final, definitive sound that echoed through the silent courtroom like a thunderclap.

Daniel bowed his head, sobbing quietly into his cuffed hands, as two bailiffs stepped forward and placed their hands on his shoulders, leading him away through the secure side doors for the very last time.
