Chapter 5 - Unpacking the Deception

With Daniel locked behind bars and Vivian exiled to a dismal budget motel while sorting through her thirty-day storage rental, I finally returned to 442 Elmwood Terrace alone.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. For six months, Vivian’s shrill voice, the clinking of her wineglasses, and her constant condescending critiques had poisoned every corner of rooms I had purchased with my own sweat and dedication. Now, walking through the living room, I felt only the deep, restorative peace of reclamation.

I sat down at the heavy oak dining table—the exact spot where my ribs had been broken just days ago. The bruises on my side still ached, but healing had already begun, both physically and mentally.

My phone chimed on the table. It was an email notification from Marcus Vance, containing the preliminary forensic accounting report of Daniel and Vivian’s joint financial maneuvers over the past three years.

I opened the PDF, and the sheer scale of the betrayal unfolded before my eyes.

It wasn't just the stolen salary or the expensive dinners. For over two years, Daniel had been quietly draining our joint savings account—accounts I had foolishly allowed him access to under the guise of "marital unity." He had funneled over eighty thousand dollars into hidden accounts controlled entirely by Vivian.

Worse still, Vivian had been using those funds to pay off personal debts accumulated from her former socialite lifestyle, while simultaneously telling her wealthy friends that her "generous son and daughter-in-law" were supporting her out of filial piety.

Ring. Ring.

My phone buzzed with an incoming call. The caller ID displayed an unknown number, but the area code belonged to the local county correctional facility.

I swiped to answer, placing it on speaker.

"Eleanor?" Daniel’s voice came through, sounding hollow, desperate, and terrifyingly thin. "Eleanor, please, you have to help me. They won't let me make phone calls after six. They put me in a cell with two guys who—Eleanor, please, I'm begging you. Drop the charges. Drop the lawsuit."

I remained silent for a long moment, letting the heavy, suffocating weight of his desperation sink into the phone line.

"Daniel," I said quietly, my voice steady and unyielding. "Do you remember what you said to me while I was lying on this exact floor, gasping for air with broken bones?"

A choked sob came from the other end. "I... I was angry. I didn't mean—"

"You told me to stop being dramatic," I interrupted, my tone freezing him mid-sentence. "And your mother told me to get out of her house."

"Mom is losing her mind, Eleanor! She’s staying in a disgusting motel room! She doesn't have any money left because the bank froze her accounts!" Daniel cried out.

"Good," I replied coldly. "Because every single cent she and you stole from my accounts over the past three years is currently being tracked by my forensic accountants. Every wire transfer, every luxury purchase, every hidden stash. We aren't just evicting her from the house, Daniel. We are filing a civil lawsuit to recover every single dollar, with maximum statutory interest."

"You can't do that! We're married!" Daniel screamed, panic overriding his sorrow.

"Not for much longer," I said evenly. "My divorce petition was filed this morning. Grounds: physical abuse, financial fraud, and abandonment. You’ll be served your copies in your cell tomorrow morning."

"Eleanor—wait, please! Don't do this! I love you!"

"Save it for your cellmate, Daniel," I said, and calmly tapped the red end-call button.
