Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Counter-Attack

Two weeks had passed since Daniel’s arrest. The physical ache in my ribs had dulled to a manageable soreness, and I had returned to work remotely, managing my engineering team from the comfort of my home office. The locks had been changed, security cameras installed at every perimeter angle, and my peace was absolute.

Until Tuesday afternoon, when the front doorbell rang.

I glanced at my desk monitor, which displayed the live feed from the porch camera. Standing outside was not a sheriff’s deputy, nor a delivery driver. It was Vivian Vance.

She looked entirely different from the proud, immaculate matriarch who had once thrown my handbag into the hallway. Her hair was unwashed and frizzed from the humidity, her designer coat was rumpled, and she leaned heavily against the porch pillar as if struggling to maintain her balance. Yet, despite her desperate appearance, her eyes burned with a manic, venomous fury.

She pressed the doorbell again—long and aggressively.

I picked up my phone, opened the intercom app linked to the doorbell speaker, and clicked to speak.

"You’re trespassing, Vivian," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the outdoor speaker. "Step off the property right now, or I’ll call the sheriff."

Vivian recoiled slightly, glaring directly into the camera lens with a sneer. "Open this door, you ungrateful little parasite! You think you've won, don't you? You think you can destroy my son's life, throw me onto the street, and get away with it?"

"You destroyed your son’s life all by yourself, Vivian. And this house is mine," I replied calmly. "You have four minutes before the police arrive. I suggest you walk away."

"I am not leaving until you listen to me!" Vivian shrieked, slamming her fist against the door frame. "I went to the prosecutor’s office this morning! I told them everything! I told them that you orchestrated the entire financial setup, that you provoked Daniel into hitting you, that you’re a mentally unstable fraud! They’re going to investigate you!"

I couldn't help the small, cold smile that touched my lips. "Vivian, do you really think the prosecutor’s office listens to a disgraced woman whose son is sitting in maximum-security remand facing felony battery and corporate embezzlement charges?"

"They will listen to a mother defending her family!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate sob. "You ruined us! I have nothing left! My friends won't even answer my calls! My apartment is gone! You stole my life!"

"No, Vivian," I said softly, leaning closer to my microphone. "I simply stopped letting you live mine."

A distant wail of police sirens began to echo down the street.

Vivian’s head snapped toward the corner of the road. Her expression of wild fury instantly melted into stark, trembling panic. She remembered the cold steel handcuffs, the holding cells, the absolute lack of sympathy from the authorities.

"This isn't over," she hissed venomously into the camera lens, her voice shaking with impotent rage. "I will make sure everyone knows what kind of monster you really are. I will ruin you, Eleanor!"

She turned on her heel, stumbling awkwardly down the front steps just as a marked police cruiser rounded the corner with its lights flashing. By the time Deputy Miller stepped out of his car, Vivian was already scurrying down the sidewalk like a cornered animal, disappearing around the neighborhood corner.

Deputy Miller walked up to my front door, checking the perimeter before looking up at the security camera and giving a reassuring thumbs-up. I nodded back through the screen. Another battle won. The walls were closing in around them, and there was nowhere left for them to run.
