Chapter 4 - The Arraignment

The courtroom of the municipal district court was cool, echoing with the rustle of papers and the low murmurs of attorneys discussing plea bargains. I sat in the second row, wearing a structured dark coat that carefully concealed the heavy rib binder strapped tightly around my torso. Though every breath still carried a dull, persistent ache, my posture was rigid and unyielding.

When the bailiff called the court to order, the heavy side door opened, and Daniel was led in.

He looked unrecognizable. Gone was the immaculate, arrogant corporate manager who strutted into our kitchen with an expensive suit and a condescending sneer. In his place stood a broken, disheveled man in an orange jumpsuit, his hair uncombed, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes. Shackles clinked heavily around his ankles as he shuffled toward the defense table.

As he took his seat, Daniel’s eyes scanned the courtroom. When they landed on me sitting in the second row, his face twisted in a mixture of horror, betrayal, and desperate pleading. He half-raised his chained hands as if to reach out, but his public defender quickly pulled him back down by the shoulder.

Judge Sarah Henderson, a formidable magistrate with decades of bench experience, adjusted her glasses and looked down at the case file before her.

"We have Docket Number CR-2026-8819," Judge Henderson announced, her voice echoing clearly through the room. "The State versus Daniel Vance. Charges include felony domestic battery resulting in severe bodily injury, alongside misdemeanor counts of intimidation and coercion."

The prosecutor stood up immediately. "Your Honor, the State moves for no bail, given the severity of the physical trauma inflicted upon the victim—including two fractured ribs—the existence of responding officer body-cam footage capturing the defendant's aggressive behavior, and a history of documented psychological and financial control."

Daniel’s public defender stood nervously. "Your Honor, my client wishes to enter a plea of not guilty. He expresses deep remorse for what he characterizes as an unfortunate domestic dispute, and requests a modest bail so he can reconcile with his family and return to his place of employment."

Before the judge could respond, I stood up from my seat.

"Your Honor," I said clearly, my voice ringing out across the courtroom.

Judge Henderson looked up, surprised, but nodded. "Are you the victim, Eleanor Vance? Do you wish to make a statement under statutory rights?"

"Yes, Your Honor," I replied, stepping forward to the railing. I kept my movements controlled to avoid straining my ribs, but my gaze was fixed entirely on Daniel, who shrank back into his chair as if burned by my words.

"For three years, the defendant systematically dismantled my independence, stole my earnings to support his mother’s lavish lifestyle, and treated my home as a family compound for people who despised me," I said, every word dripping with calm, freezing precision. "Last night, when I refused to surrender my personal finances, he broke my ribs while his mother laughed and cheered him on."

I reached into my coat and placed a single document onto the court clerk’s desk—a formal employment termination notice.

"Furthermore, Your Honor, as of 8:00 AM this morning, following an internal corporate audit triggered by my legal team, Daniel Vance has been formally terminated from his position as Senior Director at Apex Financial for corporate embezzlement, fraudulent expense reporting, and funneling company client funds into personal accounts to fund his gambling habits."

The courtroom instantly erupted into a flurry of whispered murmurs. Daniel’s head snapped up, his face turning an ash-gray color. He stared at me with pure, unadulterated shock.

"You... you knew?" Daniel choked out, his voice cracking desperately before the bailiff instantly silenced him.

Judge Henderson slammed her gavel down twice, restoring absolute silence. She looked at Daniel with a look of profound disgust, then turned her gaze to me.

"Thank you, Mrs. Vance. Your documentation is entered into the permanent record," Judge Henderson declared. She turned her steely eyes back to the defense table. "Given the severity of the domestic violence, the flight risk, and the newly revealed financial crimes, bail is officially denied. The defendant will remain remanded in custody pending trial."

Clank.

The heavy shackles sounded again as the bailiff grabbed Daniel by the arm, hauling him backward through the secure doors. He didn't look back this time. His entire world had collapsed, and he had done it entirely to himself.
