Chapter 9 - THE AFTERMATH

Three months later.
The trial of Enzo Caruso and the subsequent dismantling of both the Caruso and Valenti syndicates dominated international news headlines for weeks.
With Enzo’s full confession and the mountains of evidence uncovered by federal investigators, over forty high-ranking mob figures were indicted. The Silver Serpent mercenary network was permanently dissolved, its members arrested across three continents.
Enzo Caruso was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Siena Valenti, having surrendered herself to federal authorities two days after the Oyster Bay siege, received a reduced sentence in exchange for her full cooperation in dismantling her family's illegal operations. During her sentencing, the judge noted Sarah Miller’s impassioned character testimony regarding Siena’s tragic motivations, granting her a path to rehabilitation.
In a quiet courtroom in Manhattan, the legal custody of Leo Caruso was officially transferred to Enzo’s sister, Sofia Caruso—a soft-spoken, kind-hearted painter who lived in a beautiful, sunny coastal town in Tuscany, Italy.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, Sarah stood at John F. Kennedy International Airport, watching the bustling crowds through the glass windows of the international terminal.
Beside her stood fourteen-year-old Toby, looking healthier and happier than he ever had. Thanks to a legally sanctioned victim trust fund created from the seized assets of Caruso Shipping, Toby’s medical expenses were fully secured for life, and Sarah had been awarded a substantial legal settlement for her heroic actions and injuries.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Sofia Caruso walked up, holding a sleeping Leo in her arms. The six-year-old boy looked peaceful, his small arms wrapped tightly around his newly repaired red-and-blue robot.
"He insisted on holding it until he fell asleep," Sofia said with a warm, gentle Italian accent, smiling at Sarah.
Sarah smiled back, reaching out to gently touch Leo’s soft cheek. "He’s a strong little boy. He’s going to have a wonderful life with you in Italy."
Sofia took Sarah’s hand, squeezing it tightly. "Words will never be enough, Sarah. You gave him a future. You gave him a life away from the darkness."
"Just make sure he grows up knowing he is loved," Sarah said softly. "And let him color as much as he wants."
"I promise," Sofia replied.
Leo stirred slightly, opening his big brown eyes. He rubbed his face, saw Sarah, and reached out his small arms to hug her neck.
"Will you come visit me, Sarah?" Leo whispered into her ear. "We have big beaches in Italy."
"I will," Sarah promised, kissing his forehead. "I'll bring Toby, and we can build the biggest sandcastles in the world."
"Promise?"
"Cross my heart."
Sarah watched through the terminal windows as Sofia and Leo boarded their flight to Rome. As the massive airliner lifted off into the bright blue autumn sky, Sarah felt a profound sense of peace wash over her soul.
"What do we do now, Sarah?" Toby asked, wrapping his arm around his older sister's shoulder. "We don't have rent to worry about. We don't have to worry about insulin. We can go anywhere."

Sarah looked at her younger brother, seeing the bright, limitless future shining in his eyes.
"Now, Toby," Sarah said with a soft smile, "we finally get to live."
