Chapter 7 - THE SIEGE OF OYSTER BAY

The drive to Oyster Bay was a blur of soaring speed and sheer desperation. Sarah pushed the stolen delivery van to its absolute limits, weaving through early morning traffic on the Long Island Expressway, her knuckles white as she gripped the steering wheel.
Her physical body was screaming in protest. The bullet wound in her side felt as though it had torn open, wet warmth soaking into her shirt, but she ignored it. The image of Leo coloring his robot, his innocent smile, was the only thing keeping her conscious.
At 6:15 AM, the sun broke over the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of orange and pink.
Sarah pulled the van off the main highway onto a secluded, tree-lined road winding through the ultra-wealthy estates of Oyster Bay. Up ahead, hidden behind thick iron gates and massive stone walls, sat the Caruso Long Island compound.
As she rounded the final bend, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet morning.
Pop-pop-pop! Boom!
Siena’s strike team had already breached the perimeter. Smoke was rising from the security gate, which had been blown open with explosives.
Sarah slammed her foot on the accelerator. The delivery van roared forward, crashing straight through the damaged iron gates, tires screeching over shattered glass and twisted metal.
The estate grounds looked like a warzone. Tactical mercenaries in black gear with Silver Serpent patches were advancing up the long gravel driveway, trading heavy automatic fire with Enzo’s private security team positioned behind stone pillars and high-end sports cars.
Sarah slammed the van into park right in the middle of the crossfire, blocking the line of sight between the two groups.
She threw the door open and scrambled out, holding her hands high in the air, clutching the tactical satellite radio in her right hand.
"STOP FIRING!" Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing across the courtyard. "STOP FIRING!"
A bullet ripped through the air near her head, embedding itself in the van's frame. She limped directly into the middle of the gravel drive, positioning her body between the two armies, just as she had done three weeks ago in the hotel ballroom.
"STAND DOWN!" Sarah shouted, pointing the radio at the Valenti mercenaries. "Siena called it off! I spoke to her! Check your radios! Check your frequencies!"
The commander of the Valenti strike team, a heavily armored man wearing a night-vision helmet, signaled his men to pause. He clicked his earbud, listening intently to an incoming transmission.
After five agonizing seconds, the commander lowered his rifle. "Commander Siena has ordered a retreat," he barked to his men. "Fall back! Move to the extraction vehicles!"
The Valenti mercenaries slowly began retreating into the surrounding woods, keeping their weapons trained on the house as they backed away.
The courtyard fell into a sudden, eerie silence, broken only by the sound of crackling fires and the heavy panting of injured men.
The heavy oak front doors of the Caruso mansion swung open.
Enzo Caruso stepped out onto the marble porch, flanked by Val and four guards armed with assault rifles. Enzo’s face was pale, his eyes wide with utter shock as he looked at Sarah standing bloody, bruised, and victorious in the center of his ruined driveway.
"Sarah?" Enzo gasped, stepping down the stairs. "How... how are you here? Siena said—"
"Siena is gone," Sarah interrupted, her voice shaking with exhaustion. She limped toward the porch, every step an agonizing battle against gravity. "It’s over, Enzo."
Enzo rushed down the stairs, reaching out to support her as her legs finally gave out. He caught her before she hit the gravel, holding her against his chest.
"You saved us again," Enzo whispered, genuine emotion thick in his voice. "You crazy, brilliant girl. You brought down my enemies and saved my home."
Sarah pulled back slightly, looking up into Enzo Caruso’s eyes. There was no gratitude in her face. Only a cold, unwavering resolve.
"I didn't do this for you, Enzo," Sarah said quietly. "I did this for Leo. And I did it for Mia."
Enzo’s face instantly drained of all color. "What did you say?"

Sarah reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the file she had stolen from Val's car hours earlier—the official structural report on Pier 42, showing his signed refusal to fund the necessary repairs.
"It’s over," Sarah repeated. "I sent a copy of this document to the FBI ten minutes ago from the van. The federal agents are already on their way here."
