Chapter 3 - DAGGERS AND DAUGHTERS

Three weeks passed.

Under the intense care of Enzo’s private medical staff, Sarah’s body healed at a remarkable speed. The bullet wounds closed into jagged pink scars, and with rigorous physical therapy, she regained the ability to walk, albeit with a slight limp in her left leg.

Toby was overjoyed. For the first time in his life, the fourteen-year-old boy had his own bedroom, endless video games, and unlimited medical supplies. He thought Enzo Caruso was a benevolent billionaire angel. Sarah didn't have the heart to tell him the truth about the blood that paid for their luxury.

While recovering, Sarah became an invisible presence in the sprawling 10,000-square-foot penthouse. She observed everything. She memorized the security guard rotations, the locations of the hidden cameras, and the faces of the high-profile guests who came to consult with Enzo under the cover of night.

She was searching for the Serpent.

One rainy Thursday evening, Enzo hosted a private dinner at the penthouse. Only his inner circle was invited—the high-ranking lieutenants of the Caruso syndicate. Sarah, using her lingering status as a recovering patient, quietly navigated the long hallway near the formal dining room, keeping to the shadows.

"The docks in New Jersey are secured, boss," a gruff voice echoed through the double doors, which were cracked slightly open to let out cigar smoke. That was Val, Enzo’s head of security. "But the Valenti family is squeezing our shipping lines in Brooklyn."

"The Valentis are desperate," Enzo’s calm, commanding voice replied. "Old man Valenti is dying. His territory is fracturing. He doesn't have the stomach for a full-scale war."

"It wasn't Old Man Valenti who sent the shooter to the Halston Hotel, Enzo," a sharp, icy female voice cut in.

Sarah pressed her back against the wall, listening intently.

"It was his daughter," the woman continued. "Siena Valenti. She took over the vanguard three months ago. She’s young, she’s ruthless, and she’s wearing the old mercenary crest."

The crest. Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs.

"Siena is a ghost," Val added. "She uses the Silver Serpent—an elite faction of mercenaries her grandfather created decades ago. They don't take orders from the old syndicate council. They only answer to her. She wants Leo because she knows taking out your heir breaks your line of succession."

Inside the room, the sound of a heavy glass slamming onto a crystal decanter echoed.

"Siena made a fatal mistake targeting my son," Enzo hissed, his voice dripping with pure venom. "She thought she could strike at my heart and hide in the dark. But the Silver Serpent emblem goes both ways. It was my father who designed that crest alongside hers. It represents a pact... a pact she just broke."

Sarah gasped softly. A pact.

The silver serpent wasn't just a symbol of the enemy. It was a shared legacy. Enzo wore it as a reminder of an old alliance; Siena Valenti wore it as a declaration of war.

Suddenly, a floorboard beneath Sarah’s foot gave an audible creak.

Inside the dining room, the conversation instantly died.

"Who's out there?" Val’s harsh voice barked.

Sarah froze, panic surging through her blood. She couldn't run with her limping leg; they would catch her in seconds. Desperate, she reached into her pocket, pulled out a small rubber ball Leo had given her earlier, and tossed it down the hallway toward the kitchen.

It bounced loudly across the hardwood floor. Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.

The dining room door slammed open. Val stepped out, his hand resting on the holster beneath his jacket, his eyes sweeping the hallway.

Sarah pulled herself deeply into the recessed alcove of a large marble statue, holding her breath, pressing her hand over her mouth.

Val walked right past her hiding spot, following the sound of the bouncing ball toward the kitchen. "Just a stray toy," he grunted back to the room. "The boy must have left it."

"Check the perimeter anyway," Enzo commanded from inside.

Sarah waited until Val entered the kitchen before slipping quietly back down the dark corridor toward her quarters.

Her mind was spinning. Siena Valenti. The daughter of Enzo’s rival was the one who had ordered the hit on Leo. But why would the assassin target a six-year-old boy instead of Enzo himself? Taking down the leader of the Caruso family would cause immediate chaos and power vacuums. Killing the son would only invite relentless, scorched-earth vengeance.

Unless... killing Leo wasn't just about winning a gang war.

Unless it was personal.

When Sarah reached her room, she found Leo sitting on her bed, waiting for her. He was holding his drawing book, but he wasn't drawing. He looked up at her with big, wide eyes filled with an unsettling amount of adult sadness.

"Sarah?" he asked softly.

"Hey, buddy," Sarah said, relaxing her shoulders and forcing a smile as she limped over to sit beside him. "Why aren't you in bed?"

"I heard Daddy talking to the scary men," Leo whispered, clutching his knees to his chest. "They said the lady with the snake pin is coming for us. Like the man at the hotel."

Sarah reached out and pulled the boy into a gentle hug. "Nobody is going to hurt you, Leo. I won't let them."

Leo pulled back, looking into her eyes with startling intensity. "The lady with the snake... she came to my school last month. Before the hotel."

Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. "What did you say?"

"A lady came to the playground," Leo whispered, leaning in close. "She wore a silver snake pin on her coat. She gave me a piece of candy and told me that my daddy stole something from her family a long time ago. She said... she said she was going to take away what my daddy loved most, so he would feel how she feels."

Sarah felt a cold terror settle in her stomach.

The hit at the Halston Hotel hadn't been a political move or a territorial dispute. It was a vendetta of pure, unadulterated grief. And Siena Valenti wasn't finished.
