Chapter 5 - THE DEVIL'S DEN

When Sarah woke up, she was tied securely to a wooden chair in the middle of a damp, cold room smelling of salt, rust, and old fish.

Bare concrete walls surrounded her, dripping with moisture. High above, a single flickering bulb hung from a frayed wire, casting long, eerie shadows across the floor. Out in the distance, the low foghorn of a cargo ship blew through the night air.

She was at the Brooklyn docks—the heart of the Valenti family territory.

Her head throbbed painfully from where Siena had struck her, and her bullet wounds burned like fire from being dragged through the escape tunnels. She tested the ropes binding her wrists behind the chair; they were thick nylon, tied by someone who knew how to secure a prisoner.

Footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway outside.

The heavy iron door swung open, screeching on rusty hinges. Siena Valenti walked in, accompanied by a tall, older man with silver-streaked hair and a heavy cane. This was Don Carmine Valenti—the dying patriarch of the Valenti family.

The old man looked at Sarah with weary, sunken eyes. "So this is the girl who saved the Caruso boy."

"She’s a distraction, Father," Siena said, leaning against a wooden crate, her arms crossed over her chest. "Enzo sent his security team into a frenzy looking for her. While his men are searching the city streets, our secondary team is moving into position at his estate in Long Island."

Sarah’s eyes widened with horror. "Leo isn't at the penthouse?"

Siena smiled, a cold, predatory curve of her lips. "Did you really think Enzo would keep his prized son in the city after a garage ambush? As soon as the shooting started, Val snuck the boy out through the private heliport to his secure Long Island compound. Exactly where I wanted him."

"You used me as bait," Sarah realized, her voice trembling with anger. "You let Val see you so he would move the boy!"

"Enzo’s defensive measures at the city penthouse were too tight," Siena admitted smoothly. "We couldn't launch an assault there without alerting the federal authorities. But his Long Island estate? It’s surrounded by woods. Isolated. Perfect for a raid."

"He’s just a child!" Sarah screamed, straining against her ropes, the chair legs scraping violently against the concrete. "Leave him out of this!"

Don Carmine raised his cane, tapping it sharply against the floor. "Silence, girl!" the old man barked, his voice raspy from years of illness. "Enzo Caruso took my granddaughter! The law wouldn't punish him. God wouldn't punish him. So my daughter will!"

"Your daughter is going to ruin everything!" Sarah yelled back, staring directly into Siena’s eyes. "Look at her! She’s consumed by vengeance! If you kill Enzo’s son, Enzo won't just fight a mob war—he will burn New York City to the ground! Every cop, every federal agent, every rival family will hunt you down until there’s nothing left of the Valenti name!"

Siena walked over to Sarah, stepping close until their faces were inches apart. "Then let it burn," she whispered with horrifying serenity. "I died three years ago on that pier with Mia. Everything I do now is just settling the bill."

Siena pulled a satellite phone from her pocket and dialed a number. She set it to speaker mode.

After two rings, Enzo Caruso’s harsh, frantic voice blasted through the speaker.

"Siena!" Enzo roared, his voice distorted by static. "If you touch that girl or come anywhere near my family, I will skin you alive! I have fifty men surrounding your father's social club right now!"

"Your social club strike is useless, Enzo," Siena said calmly into the phone. "I don't care about my father's property. And I don't have your son... yet. But I do have your heroic little server, Sarah."

Silence fell over the line for three agonizing seconds.

"What do you want, Siena?" Enzo’s voice lowered, stripped of its fury, replaced by a cold, calculating tone.

"I want you to answer for Mia," Siena said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. "I want a full public confession of your negligence on Pier 42. I want you to step down as head of the syndicate and turn yourself into the federal prosecutor’s office by dawn. Do that, and the girl lives. Your son lives."

"And if I refuse?" Enzo asked quietly.

"Then at sunrise, I attack the Long Island compound," Siena replied coldly. "And I will bring your server’s body with me."

Siena snapped the phone shut, ending the call. She turned to her guards. "Keep her secured. If she tries to move, break her good leg."

Siena and her father turned and exited the room, heavy iron door locking behind them with a definitive, echoing clang.

Left alone in the dim light, Sarah breathed heavily. Her mind raced. She looked around the dark room, searching frantically for anything she could use.

Her eyes landed on the rusted metal pipe running down the wall next to her chair. The bracket holding the pipe to the wall was old, jagged, and corroded by salt air.

If she could reach it, she might just have a chance.
