Chapter 4 - THE THREAT EMERGES

The DNA results came back within twelve hours: a 99.99% maternal match. Elena sat in Caden’s expansive glass-walled office, holding the paper that officially declared what her heart had known the moment she picked up that fallen teddy bear.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office burst open. Ortega stepped in, his face tight.

"Boss, we have a problem at the perimeter," Ortega reported, his hand resting near his concealed holster. "Gary Miller—the manager from the diner."

Elena frowned. "Gary? What is he doing here?"

"He followed the car last night," Ortega explained coldly. "He’s been lingering around the outer gate, telling the guards he has information about 'the waitress's fake tragic past' and threatening to go to the press about Caden Voss taking in an unstable woman."

Caden’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal ice. "He followed my vehicle?"

"He thinks he can score a payout," Ortega replied. "He brought a tabloid reporter with him."

Elena felt a sudden pang of panic. "Gary is spiteful. If he spins a story that I'm mentally unfit, Moretti’s lawyers could use it to challenge my credibility before we file the DNA evidence!"

"He won't spin anything," Caden said, standing up smooth and lethal as a panther. He looked at Elena. "Stay here with the children."

"No," Elena said, standing up to meet his gaze. "Gary spent months making me feel powerless. He used my grief to keep me under his thumb. I'm not hiding in an office while he tries to ruin the only good thing left in my life."

Caden stared at her for a long second, a faint, rare trace of respect softening the hard line of his mouth. "Then put on a coat. Let's go educate Mr. Miller."

At the compound’s heavy security gate, Gary was waving his arms frantically at two impassive, armed guards, a young man with a camera standing nervously beside him.

"I'm telling you, she's unhinged!" Gary was yelling. "She lost her mind over a year ago! Mr. Voss is being scammed—"

The heavy iron gate slid open silently. Caden stepped out first, flanked by Ortega, with Elena walking calmly by his side.

Gary froze, his face turning pale as he realized the sheer scale of the security detail. But greed quickly took over. "Mr. Voss! I came to warn you! Elena worked for me—she’s unstable, she’s been making up stories about lost babies for months—"

"Gary," Elena interrupted, her voice steady, cold, and echoing with an authority she had never possessed behind the diner counter. "You are standing on private property accusing a mother of mourning the children who were stolen from her."

"Stolen?" Gary laughed nervously, looking at the reporter. "Listen to her! She’s delusional!"

Caden stepped forward, pulling a thick legal injunction from inside his coat. He handed it to Ortega, who shoved it hard into Gary's chest.

"That," Caden said, his voice dropping into a register that made the tabloid reporter visibly flinch, "is a non-disclosure order backed by a civil suit for extortion and criminal trespass. If you or your friend print a single word about Elena Voss, my legal team will liquidate every asset you own before dinner. And if you step within a mile of my family again..."

Caden didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The sheer threat radiating from his posture was enough to make Gary’s knees buckle.

"Get out of my sight," Caden commanded softly.

Gary didn't wait. He grabbed the reporter by the arm, turned, and practically ran toward his rusty sedan parked down the road.

As they watched the car speed away, Elena let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for fourteen months. She looked up at Caden. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me," Caden said softly, his dark eyes searching hers. "You stood your ground. But this was just a scout. Moretti knows you're here now."
