Chapter 10 - A MERCY EARNED

One year later.

The grand lawn of the Voss compound was filled with balloon arches, colorful playhouses, and the joyful noise of children shouting. It was the triplets' second birthday party.

Julian was running across the grass, proudly showing Ortega a wooden toy fire truck. Leo was sitting quietly by the sandbox, meticulously building a fortress with a small shovel. And little Maya was riding high on Caden’s shoulders, holding onto his dark hair and laughing as he walked around the perimeter.

Elena stood on the terrace, holding a glass of fresh lemonade, watching her family with a heart so full it felt like it might burst. She wore a beautiful summer dress, her skin glowing, her dark eyes completely free of the shadows that had once haunted them.

Caden walked up the terrace steps, carefully lowering Maya into Elena’s waiting arms. The little girl instantly nestled into Elena’s neck.

"Mama!" Maya giggled, pressing a sticky, cake-covered kiss to Elena's cheek.

"Happy birthday, my sweet girl," Elena laughed, kissing Maya’s nose before setting her down to run after her brothers.

Caden stepped up behind Elena, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her tight against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, his eyes following the three children playing safely in the sunshine.

"They're growing up so fast," Caden murmured softly.

"They're safe," Elena said, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "They're happy. That's all that matters."

"You did that," Caden said softly, his hand resting over hers. "You gave them a home. You gave me a life."

Elena looked out across the sunny estate, hearing the laughter of her three beautiful children echoing off the stone walls that had once felt like an iron fortress, but now felt simply like home.

Fourteen months of dark grief had brought her to her knees in a cold alleyway. But love, fierce and unyielding, had brought her here—to the arms of a man who loved her beyond measure, and the three tiny souls who would never stop calling her Mama.
