Chapter 2 - THE IRON FORTRESS

The interior of Caden’s armored SUV was silent save for the soft, rhythmic breathing of three exhausted toddlers. The moment Elena had stepped into the back seat, the chaos had simply evaporated. Julian, the boy who had dropped his bear, had immediately pressed his face into her thigh. Leo had curled into her hip, and little Maya had refused to let go of Elena’s pinky finger, falling asleep with her tiny brow still damp from tears.
Elena stared out the tinted glass at the passing city lights, her hands gently smoothing the soft curls of the children she had spent fourteen agonizing months mourning.
"They haven't slept without crying themselves to exhaustion since the day I brought them home," Caden said softly from the front passenger seat, his dark eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror. "My men thought they were sick. Doctors said it was colic, behavioral attachment trauma. But they were just looking for you."
"How could a clinic do this?" Elena’s voice was barely a whisper, fiercely protective as she adjusted the blanket over Leo's shoulders. "How could anyone tear newborn babies away from their mother and lie like that?"
"Money. Power," Caden replied, his jaw tightening. "My late wife, Victoria, came from the Moretti family. It was an arranged alliance. When she learned she couldn't carry children, her father made sure the heir to the Voss name wouldn't come from an outsider. They used a surrogate—you—and paid the clinic director millions to ensure you were erased from the narrative completely."
The SUV turned onto a winding, private road flanked by towering wrought-iron gates and thick pine trees. The Voss estate emerged from the darkness like a gothic fortress: concrete, dark stone, and floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass, heavily guarded by armed men in tailored suits.
When the car stopped, Caden opened the rear door himself. Instead of letting his guards handle the children, he reached in, his large hands surprisingly gentle as he lifted Julian and Leo together. Elena carefully scooped up Maya, holding the little girl against her chest. Maya let out a soft sigh, burying her face into Elena's neck.
"Welcome to the compound," Caden said, leading her through the grand foyer. "You’ll stay in the master wing with the children. Ortega has already doubled the perimeter guards."
A stern-looking older woman in a sharp gray dress stepped forward, her eyes widening as she saw the children sleeping peacefully against Elena. "Mr. Voss... the nursery is prepared, but who—"
"This is Elena," Caden cut her off smoothly, his voice carrying an unquestionable authority. "Her word in this house is second only to mine. If she asks for anything, she gets it instantly. Do you understand, Mrs. Gable?"
"Of course, sir," the housekeeper bowed her head slightly, offering Elena a respectful, curious look.
Caden led Elena up a sweeping spiral staircase to a massive suite featuring a state-of-the-art nursery attached to a luxurious guest bedroom. Soft nightlights cast a warm glow across three oak cribs. Together, they laid the sleeping children down.
As Elena leaned over Maya’s crib, the little girl murmured in her sleep, her tiny hand reaching out into the air. Elena placed her finger in Maya's palm, tears threatening to spill again.

"They are real," Elena whispered, looking up at Caden, who stood framed in the doorway, watching her with an unreadable expression. "I wasn't crazy. I felt them in my sleep every night."
"You weren't crazy, Elena," Caden said softly, stepping closer. "You were robbed. But as long as you are under my roof, no one will ever touch you or these children again."
