Chapter 7 - The Quiet After the Storm

Three months passed.

The fallout from the arrest of Hector Lucchesi sent shockwaves through the North American business and underworld communities. The Lucchesi syndicate collapsed completely under federal indictments, its assets seized, its leadership imprisoned for life.

Marcus, having cooperated fully with federal prosecutors and confessed his role under duress, was sentenced to five years of probation and mandatory rehabilitation, permanently banished from the Moretti inner circle but spared prison.

In Westchester, the grand Moretti estate was undergoing a quiet, beautiful transformation.

The dark, gloomy atmosphere that had hung over the mansion since Claire’s death was gone. Bright sunlight streamed through the high windows, fresh flowers filled the entryways, and the sound of children’s laughter echoed through the long corridors every single afternoon.

The triplets—Theo, Miles, and Nora—were thriving. They had turned three years old, their cheeks healthy and rosy, their speech developing rapidly.

And Sophie had become their official big sister.

On a warm Saturday morning in May, Adrien walked into the sunlit garden house behind the estate.

He no longer wore his dark charcoal suits or loose ties. He wore a dark blue sweater, jeans, and rolled-up sleeves, showing his tattooed forearms as he carried a wooden tray loaded with fresh lemonade and fruit slices.

In the center of the garden, Elena was sitting on a wide wooden bench, helping Sophie, Theo, Miles, and Nora plant colorful pansies in ceramic pots.

"Watch out, Theo," Sophie giggled, gently guiding his little hand. "You're putting too much dirt in that one!"

"Dirt good!" Theo declared proudly, smearing a smudge of brown soil across his own nose.

Miles and Nora cheered, clapping their soil-covered hands together.

Elena laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that made Adrien’s heart swell with an emotion he hadn't felt in years.

Adrien set the tray on a nearby stone table, walking over to sit beside Elena on the bench.

"You're letting them ruin those thirty-dollar pots," Adrien teased gently, looking down at his soil-covered triplets.

"Pots can be washed, Mr. Moretti," Elena replied, raising an eyebrow playfully.

"I thought I told you to stop calling me Mr. Moretti," Adrien murmured, taking her hand into his. His thumb stroked softly over her knuckles—no longer the dry, tired hands of a struggling housekeeper, but the warm, soft hands of a woman who had brought light back into his broken world.

Elena blushed slightly, looking down at their joined hands. "It's a habit."

"Break it," Adrien smiled softly. "Because Vance finished filing the legal guardianship paperwork this morning. Sophie is officially under our joint protection. She has full access to the family trust, same as the triplets."

Elena looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears of gratitude. "Adrien... you didn't have to do that."

"I did," Adrien said, his voice dropping into a earnest, deeply affectionate tone. "Sophie saved my children's lives, Elena. But you... you saved mine."
