Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Betrayal

By midnight, the Westchester estate had transformed from a quiet mansion into a fortress under lockdown. Heavy steel security gates locked at the perimeter, high-powered floodlights illuminated the grounds, and fifteen armed men swept every square inch of the residence.

Upstairs, the nursery was finally at peace. With the cloth doll secured in a lead-lined signal-blocking pouch down in Vance's security lab, the high-frequency pulse ceased. Theo, Miles, and Nora had fallen into a deep, unbroken sleep.

Adrien stood beside the toddler beds, watching their little chests rise and fall. He reached down and gently tucked the blue blanket around Theo, his tattooed hand trembling ever so slightly.

"They'll sleep through the night now," Elena said softly from the doorway. She had wrapped Sophie in a fleece blanket, holding the sleeping four-year-old in her arms.

Adrien turned to look at her. For months, he had viewed Elena as just another face among his household staff—a quiet woman who moved like a shadow. But tonight, her daughter had uncovered a viper inside his house.

"You and Sophie are staying in the master guest suite tonight," Adrien said. "My personal guards will be posted outside your door."

"Mr. Moretti, that's not necessary—"

"It is necessary," Adrien interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Whoever put that device in your daughter's doll put a target on her back, whether they knew it or not. I protect those who protect my family."

He walked past her, down the grand spiral staircase, and into the subterranean level of the estate—a reinforced concrete basement that served as the nerve center of the Moretti syndicate.

In the center of a dimly lit room, bound to a heavy wooden chair, sat Marcus.

Marcus was thirty-two, dressed in a wrinkled designer suit, his hair disheveled, sweat glistening on his forehead under the harsh fluorescent lights. Two of Vance’s men stood behind him like statues.

When Adrien walked in, Marcus tried to force a confident smile, though his bloodshot eyes betrayed his sheer terror.

"Addy! What the hell is this?" Marcus stuttered, straining against the zip-ties binding his wrists. "Your goons grabbed me right out of my apartment! Is this a joke? I'm your brother-in-law!"

Adrien walked over to a steel table, picked up the lead-lined pouch, and tipped the cloth doll’s removed mechanical bug onto the surface. The tiny silver chip hit the metal with a sharp clink.

Marcus’s fake smile completely vanished. His face drained of all color.

"Do you know what this is, Marcus?" Adrien asked softly, pulling up a chair and sitting directly across from him.

"I... I have no idea—"

CRACK.

Adrien didn't raise his voice, but his hand moved with blinding speed, striking the armrest of Marcus's chair so hard the wood splintered. Marcus screamed, flinching violently.

"Don't lie to me," Adrien whispered, leaning in until he was inches from Marcus's nose. "This bug wasn't just broadcasting audio. It was transmitting through an encrypted relay tied directly to the Lucchesi family in Manhattan."

Marcus began to weep, his body shaking uncontrollably. "Addy, please! You don't understand! They forced me!"

"The Lucchesis," Adrien continued, ignoring Marcus’s cries. "The same family that controlled the trucking firm responsible for the 'accident' that killed my wife. My Claire. Your sister."

Marcus choked back a sob, hanging his head. "They have my gambling debts, Addy! Three million dollars! Don Lucchesi told me if I didn't put the bugs in your laundry line, they’d post the video files of Claire’s car..."

Adrien froze. His dark eyes locked onto Marcus with an intensity so terrifying that even Vance took half a step back.

"What video files?" Adrien asked, his voice dropping into a register so low it sounded like grinding stones.

"The... the crash video," Marcus whimpered, tears running down his collar. "It wasn't an accident, Addy. Claire found out Lucchesi was laundering money through her charity foundation. She was coming to tell you... and they cut her brake lines. They recorded it. They promised they’d delete the footage if I helped them destroy your empire from the inside!"
