Chapter 4 - The Court of Pier Twelve

The transit house on Pier Twelve was a relic of the early shipping days—a vast, brick structure that smelled of old wood, rust, and the dark, cold waters of Lake Michigan. Rain beat a relentless rhythm against the corrugated iron roof as Damian stepped out of his armored SUV, his trench coat billowing in the fierce lake wind. Bishop and ten tactical guards flanked him, their hands resting on their weapons.
Inside the transit house, sitting at a long steel table beneath a single hanging lightbulb, was Victoria Vance. She was an elegant woman in her late forties, dressed in a sharp grey wool suit, her silver hair pulled back into a flawless, severe bun. She didn't look like a mobster; she looked like a federal judge or a corporate CEO.
"Mr. Valdez," Victoria said, her voice a cool, cultured drawl that carried perfectly through the empty warehouse. "You’ve caused a significant amount of financial disruption in New York. Vincent Marcone was an asset of our consortium. His termination costs us approximately four hundred million in projected transit revenue."
Damian walked over to the table, his heavy boots echoing on the concrete floor. He didn't sit down. He leaned forward, placing both hands on the steel surface, his glacial gray eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity.
Victoria smiled thinly, though her eyes narrowed. "An impressive speech, Damian. But we know about the boy. Leo is the sole legal heir to the Valdez logistics fortune. If something were to happen to him, the trust dissolves, and the assets default to the maritime bank we control in Luxembourg. You can protect him from bullets, but can you protect him from the law?"

"The law in this city is written by the people I permit to sit in the courthouse," Damian countered smoothly, straightening up. "If a single legal document regarding my nephew’s trust is filed in New York or Luxembourg, I will shut down every shipping route from Chicago to Montreal. Your consortium will lose billions before the first court date is set. Do you want to test my resolve, Ms. Vance?"
The silence that followed was thick with the realization of absolute leverage. Victoria Vance looked at the mafia king, searching for a single hint of hesitation or fear. She found nothing but the cold, unyielding ice of a man who had already sacrificed everything to build his perimeter.
