Chapter 2 - The Vacuum of Power

The death of an empire boss did not bring peace; it brought a sudden, violent vacuum that drew every minor predator in Illinois toward the center. By Thursday morning, the financial markets in Chicago were reacting to the sudden disappearance of Vincent Marcone. Shell companies associated with the Marcone line were dumping assets, and the waterfront was an open wound.

Damian stood at the head of the massive mahogany table in the underground war room, his eyes scanning a digital map of the Great Lakes transit routes. Nola sat to his right, her laptop open as she analyzed the corporate structures Marcus had compromised.

"Marcus wasn't just taking cash from Marcone," Nola explained, pointing to a series of hidden transactions routed through a bank in Luxembourg. "He was setting up a legal transfer of our agricultural sector lands. If Vincent had killed you at the rail yard, this document would have automatically executed, granting a European consortium called Vanguard International full access to the Chicago ports."

"Vanguard," Damian muttered, his gray eyes darkening like a winter storm. "They’re the old money backing the East Coast syndicates. Vincent was just their attack dog."

The Syndicate HierarchyThe Valdez Line: Controls 70% of the rail and river logistics.

The Marcone Remnants: Currently leaderless, holding the southern warehouses.

The Vanguard Consortium: The hidden hand providing international capital and legal protection to rival factions.

Bishop entered the room, dropping a file onto the table. "Marcus talked, boss. Before we shipped him to the federal facility in Indiana, he confirmed that Vanguard has already sent an envoy to Chicago. A woman named Victoria Vance. No relation to Nola, but she carries the name of the old New York Commission."

Nola stiffened at the mention of the Commission. Her past in New York was a collection of scars she had tried to bury in the soil of Damian’s greenhouse. To hear that the shadow was moving west toward her new sanctuary was a physical blow.

Damian noticed her reaction. He placed his large hand over hers, his thumb tracing the signet ring hanging from her neck. "She won't touch you, Nola. In this city, the law belongs to the magistrate, but the streets belong to me. If Victoria Vance wants to talk about my ports, she will have to do it on her knees."
