Chapter 9 - The Letter

One afternoon, while Leo was taking his afternoon nap in the nursery, the doorbell rang softly.

Daniel opened the front door to find the local mail carrier handing him a stack of letters. Among the utility bills and magazines was a single, plain white envelope stamped with the official return address of the Gatesville State Women’s Prison.

The letter was addressed to Daniel Morgan in his mother’s familiar, elegant cursive handwriting.

Daniel held the envelope in his hand for a long moment, standing on the sunlit porch. The wind rustled through the oak leaves overhead, cool and fresh.

Rachel walked up behind him, resting her hand on his waist. "Is that from her?" she asked quietly.

Daniel looked at his wife, then down at the unopened letter.

"Do you want to read it?" Rachel asked gently, holding no anger or resentment in her voice, only deep compassion for her husband.

Daniel looked at the envelope. He knew what would be inside. It would be more excuses, more blame, more attempts to manipulate his emotions, to drag him back into the toxic web of control she had spun for thirty years.

Slowly, deliberately, Daniel tore the unopened letter in half. Then in quarters.

He walked over to the recycling bin near the porch steps and dropped the white scraps inside, letting the wind carry away the tiny dust particles.

He turned back to face Rachel, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace.

"My family is right here," Daniel whispered into her hair. "I have everything I will ever need."
