Chapter 4 - The Statement

By two o'clock in the morning, Rachel had been given intravenous antibiotics, high-dose pain management compatible with pregnancy, and a temporary stabilization cast on her left leg. Her pale skin was beginning to regain a soft, healthy warmth under the thick hospital blankets.
Sitting beside her bed were Detective James Vance from the SAPD Special Victims Unit and a caseworker from the Department of Family and Protective Services named Helen Roy.
Detective Vance was a seasoned officer in his late forties with a calm, methodical demeanor. He held an audio recorder on the bedside table.
"Mrs. Morgan," Detective Vance said gently, looking at Rachel. "I know you are exhausted and in pain, but I need you to state clearly for the record what happened on the afternoon of October 12th at 414 Elm Street."
Rachel looked at Daniel, who held her hand tightly, nodding his head in encouragement.
Rachel took a deep breath. "Margaret Morgan called me at 1:15 PM..."
For the next forty-five minutes, Rachel detailed every single terrifying moment. She described the fake story about the baby crib, the trap in the Victorian cellar, Margaret’s demands for her to sign away her parental rights, the physical assault on the concrete steps, the four hours she was locked in the dark while bleeding, and the relentless psychological torture Margaret had used to enforce her silence over the past three weeks.
Detective Vance took meticulous notes, his jaw tightening more and more with every detail Rachel revealed.
"Did Mrs. Morgan leave any physical documents with you in that cellar?" Vance asked.
"Yes," Rachel remembered suddenly, her eyes widening. "The legal agreement she wanted me to sign... when she shoved me, I fell on top of her purse. The paper fell out. I jammed it into the lining of my handbag while she was looking away."
Daniel shot up from his seat. "Her handbag is still in our truck in the parking garage!"
Ten minutes later, Daniel returned with Rachel’s worn leather purse. Detective Vance put on sterile blue gloves and reached inside, pulling out a folded two-page document from the inner pocket.
The document was titled: VOLUNTARY SURRENDER OF PARENTAL RIGHTS AND FINANCIAL WAIVER.
At the bottom of the page, printed clearly in dark blue ink, was Margaret Morgan’s signature, along with the official stamp and seal of a notary public dated three weeks ago.
Detective Vance stared at the paper, letting out a low whistle. "Well, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan... this isn't just a domestic assault case anymore. This is premeditated aggravated kidnapping, felony assault resulting in severe bodily injury to a pregnant person, and attempted extortion."

"Can she get out on bail?" Daniel asked, his eyes dark with anxiety.
"With this physical evidence, a pregnant victim in the ICU, and a notarized document proving premeditation?" Detective Vance smiled grimly, turning off the voice recorder. "I’m taking this directly to the magistrate judge tonight. Margaret Morgan won't be sleeping in her own bed tomorrow night."
