Chapter 2 - The Cellar and the Threat

The air in the small bedroom seemed to run out instantly. Daniel turned to look at his mother, his face drained of all color, his eyes wide with absolute horror.
"You pushed my pregnant wife down concrete stairs?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a razor-thin, deadly whisper.
Margaret didn't flinch. She adjusted the strap of her handbag, her eyes cold. "She tripped, Daniel. She was clumsy. She lost her footing because she was wearing foolish sandals."
"She shoved me!" Rachel screamed, her voice echoing off the apartment walls. "I fell down six concrete steps! My ankle snapped when I hit the bottom floor! I landed on my side, crying, praying that the baby wasn't dead! I was bleeding, Daniel!"
"And what did you do, Mom?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking violently as he took a step closer to Margaret. "What did you do while she was bleeding on your cellar floor?"
"I brought her up," Margaret said defensively, crossing her arms. "I wrapped her legs. I brought her home. I took care of it quietly so we wouldn't have a scandal!"
"She locked me down there for four hours!" Rachel countered, her chest heaving as she laid the terrible truth bare. "She left me in the dark on the cold concrete while I begged her to call an ambulance! She only came back down with a roll of bandage tape and a bottle of painkillers. She told me that if I ever told you the truth, or if I went to a hospital, she would use her money and her lawyer friends to prove I was an abusive, unstable mother. She said she would make sure CPS took our baby the second he was born!"
Daniel felt as if a physical blade had been driven through his heart.
For three weeks, his sweet, vibrant wife had been lying in this bed, suffering in agonizing physical pain from untreated fractures and infected wounds, terrified that if she sought medical help, his mother would steal their child. And all the while, Margaret had been calling him every evening, poisoning his mind, telling him that Rachel was lazy, manipulative, and hiding secrets.
Margaret was the secret.
"You twisted, vicious monster," Daniel breathed, the words tearing from his throat.
Margaret’s face finally cracked, her smug composure giving way to a ugly, contorted rage. "How dare you speak to your mother that way! I raised you! I built your life! That girl is a nobody from a trailer park! She isn't good enough for a Morgan! I did what I had to do to keep control of this family!"
"Get out," Daniel said.
"Daniel, don't be ridiculous—"
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Daniel roared, his voice so loud it shook the glass in the window frames.
He grabbed Margaret by the arm—not hard enough to leave a mark, but with an iron grip that forced her backward out of the bedroom, through the small hallway, and toward the front door of the apartment.
"You are making a huge mistake, Daniel!" Margaret shrieked, struggling against his grip as he threw the front door wide open. "She has no proof! It’s her word against mine! If you walk away from me, I will cut you off! I will ruin you!"
Daniel reached into his pocket, pulled out the spare emergency key he had given her months ago, and snapped it in half right in front of her face, tossing the brass pieces onto the hallway floor.

"If you ever step foot on this property again," Daniel said, his voice dropping into an icy cadence that made Margaret step back in genuine fear, "I will kill you with my bare hands. Never come near my wife or my son again."
He slammed the door in her face, locked the deadbolt, and leaned his forehead against the cold wood, his entire body trembling violently as he let out a choked, agonized sob.
