Chapter 7 - The Trial of Margaret Morgan

Four months later.
The sweltering Texas summer had arrived, but inside the air-conditioned 223rd District Courthouse, the atmosphere was frozen in tense anticipation.
In the center of the courtroom, sitting at the defense table dressed in a plain grey jail jumpsuit, was Margaret Morgan. Four months in county custody had stripped away her arrogant, polished facade. Her silver hair was dull and unstyled, her posture hunched, her eyes darting nervously around the room.
Across the aisle, sitting in the front row of the gallery, was Daniel. In his arms, wrapped in a soft blue blanket, was his two-month-old son, Leo.
Leo was healthy, chubby, with bright blue eyes and a crown of soft brown hair, thriving despite the horrific ordeal his mother had endured during his final trimester.
Beside Daniel sat Rachel. Her leg was fully healed, though she walked with a slight, barely noticeable limp. She wore a simple, elegant navy dress, her dark hair pulled back, her face holding a quiet, unbreakable strength.
The presiding judge, Honorable Marcus Vance (no relation to the detective), slammed his gavel onto the wooden block.
"In the matter of the State of Texas versus Margaret Morgan," Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the silent room. "The court has reviewed the jury's unanimous verdict of guilty on all counts, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Injury to a Pregnant Individual, and Felony Unlawful Restraint."
The prosecutor, a fierce woman named Victoria Vance, stood up. "Your Honor, the state requests the maximum sentence of twenty years in state prison. The defendant displayed a complete lack of remorse, calculated premeditation using a notarized document, and left a pregnant victim to suffer without medical care for weeks."
Margaret’s defense attorney stood up quickly. "Your Honor, my client is a senior citizen with no prior criminal record! She suffered a momentary lapse in judgment due to family stress—"
"A momentary lapse in judgment?!" Judge Vance interrupted sharply, leaning over his bench, glaring down at Margaret over his glasses. "Sir, your client pushed a seven-month-pregnant woman down concrete stairs, locked her in a cellar, and engaged in a weeks-long campaign of psychological torture to prevent a dying woman from reaching a hospital! That is not a lapse in judgment. That is sociopathic cruelty."
The judge turned his attention directly to Margaret.
"Margaret Morgan, you have proven yourself to be a dangerous, manipulative individual who values control over human life. I sentence you to fifteen years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice."
Margaret let out a loud, strangled gasp, collapsing back into her chair, burying her face in her hands as she wept hysterically.
Daniel didn't smile. He didn't cheer. He simply reached out, took Rachel’s hand in his, and squeezed it tightly.

As the bailiffs clicked chains around Margaret’s ankles and led her away through the side door to serve her prison term, Margaret looked back at Daniel one last time, her eyes filled with desperate, silent pleading.
Daniel turned his back on her, looking down at his sleeping son in his arms, leaving the shadows of his past behind forever.
