Chapter 7 - The Lion’s Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Regency Hotel in downtown Raleigh was packed with over five hundred elite figures—billionaire investors, state senators, energy tycoons, and corporate press.
Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, glittering light over the sea of tuxedos and evening gowns.
At the center of the head table sat Donald Vance. At sixty-two, with slicked-back silver hair, a custom Italian tuxedo, and an arrogant, triumphant smile, he looked every bit the master of the universe. With Jason Sterling mysteriously absent from the summit in Denver, Donald had taken full command of the evening's program.
Standing at the podium, Donald adjusted his microphone, smiling smoothly at the flashbulbs of the press.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues," Donald’s voice boomed across the speakers. "Tonight, Sterling Energy marks a historical milestone. In the absence of our founder, Jason Sterling, who is currently attending to private matters, I am proud to announce our groundbreaking acquisition of Apex Eco-Systems—a takeover that unifies the region's top clean-tech patents under our sole management!"
The crowd broke into polite applause. Donald beamed, raising his hands to bask in the glory.
"Furthermore," Donald continued, his eyes glinting with ruthless victory, "we have officially restructured the voting rights of our former co-founder, Claire Sterling, permanently dissolving her historical claims to the company's core assets due to her continued breach of corporate covenant—"
BANG!
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with the force of a thunderclap.
The music stopped. The reporters turned their cameras toward the entrance.
Walking down the center aisle, illuminated by the flashing bulbs of fifty cameras, was Jason Sterling.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his posture towering, regal, and terrifying.
And beside him, wearing a breathtaking floor-length emerald silk gown, her hair styled in effortless golden waves, walked me—Claire Sterling.
Behind us walked a team of twelve senior prosecutors from the State Attorney General’s Office, backed by six uniformed state troopers.
A collective, massive gasp rippled through the five hundred guests.
Donald Vance’s hands froze on the edges of the podium. His face turned from flushed red to a sickly, ghostly white.
"Jason...?" Donald stammered into the live microphone, his voice echoing awkwardly through the room. "Claire...? What... what is the meaning of this interruption?"

Jason didn't stop until he reached the foot of the stage. He looked up at Donald with a smile that was colder than a mountain blizzard.
"The meaning of this, Donald," Jason’s voice rang out, effortlessly carrying across the silent hall, "is that the party is over."
