Chapter 1 - The Phantom of Raleigh

The cold mountain air of Denver bit into my face as my three sons—Ethan, Leo, and Mason—clung to my coat, their bright laughter ringing out like bells against the roaring drone of idling luxury vehicles.
Jason Sterling stood motionless ten feet away. The billionaire titan who had cold-bloodedly dismantled our life five years ago was now shaking, his dark eyes wide, darting erratically from Ethan’s sharp jawline to Leo’s dark unruly curls, and finally to little Mason’s dimpled smile. They were five-year-old triplets—conceived during the very last month of our fragile marriage, born six months after he tossed a gold-plated fountain pen across a mahogany desk and told his lawyers to strip me of everything.
"Claire..." Jason’s voice cracked, dropping his leather designer briefcase into the slush at his feet. "Who... whose children are these?"
I wrapped my arms around Mason and stood tall, placing my body subtly between my sons and the man who had cast me into the abyss. "They're mine, Jason."
"They look like me," he whispered, stepping closer, his face turning an ashen gray. "Claire, my God... they look exactly like me. How old are they?"
"Mom, who is this man?" Ethan, the oldest by four minutes and fiercely protective, stepped in front of his brothers, narrowing his dark eyes—a glare that was a terrifying carbon copy of Jason’s own famous court-face. "Is he bothering you?"
The sight of his own five-year-old son glaring at him with open hostility seemed to hit Jason like a physical blow. He stumbled back a half-step, clutching the door of his idling Bentley.
"Ethan, sweetie, it's alright," I said gently, touching my eldest's shoulder. I looked straight into Jason's wild, terrified eyes. "Jason, you asked me five years ago who 'Julian' was. You saw messages on my phone about secret appointments, medical files, and financial support. You accused me of sleeping with an investor's son."
"You refused to tell me who he was!" Jason shouted, his voice cracking with a desperate, agonizing rage that startled the private security detail standing by his vehicle. "You spent six months sneaking out to a private clinic in Charlotte! You took hundreds of thousands of dollars from your private account! I saw the texts, Claire! 'Julian is safe, the money was transferred, don't tell Jason yet!' What was I supposed to think?!"
"Julian was my twin brother!" I screamed back, the fury of five years of silent exile finally bursting from my throat. "My twin brother who suffered from severe early-onset Huntington’s disease, living under an assumed name because your corrupt board of directors threatened to pull your company's green-energy IPO if they found out your wife carried a fatal genetic marker!"
The terminal pickup lane seemed to drop into absolute silence. The wind howled through the steel arches above, but Jason remained utterly frozen, his mouth open, his eyes glassy with sudden, staggering comprehension.
"Julian... had a genetic disease?" Jason breathed, his voice barely audible above the traffic.
"I paid for his end-of-life hospice care with my own pre-marital savings," I said, my tone turning ice-cold. "I kept it secret because your chief legal officer, Donald Vance, told me that if the press found out about my family's medical history, Sterling Energy’s clean-tech valuation would drop by forty percent before the stock launch. I sacrificed my own brother's dignity to protect your company. And when I found out I was pregnant with triplets, I went to that clinic to run genetic screenings to make sure our babies didn't carry the gene."
I took a step toward him, watching his world crumble into dust.
"I tried to tell you the night you threw the divorce papers at my face. But you were so consumed by your own ego, so convinced that every person in your life was out to betray you, that you didn't listen to a single word. You told me I was a lying whore. You told me you never wanted to see my face again."
"Claire... please..." Jason took a desperate step forward, reaching out a trembling hand toward Ethan. "I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know..."
"Don't touch him!" I snapped, pulling Ethan back. "You asked for a clean break, Jason. You got it. I built a life in Colorado without a single cent of your money. These boys are mine. They have my last name. And as far as they are concerned, their father died five years ago."
I turned toward the black suburban driver holding my car door open. "Boys, get in the car."
"Claire, wait!" Jason yelled, lunging forward, but my driver, a built ex-marine named Marcus whom I had hired three years ago when my clean-tech firm took off, stepped firmly into his path, placing a thick hand against Jason’s chest.
"Back off, sir," Marcus growled.

"Get out of my way! Those are my sons!" Jason roared, his billionaire composure entirely shattered as he wrestled against Marcus's grip. "Claire! Talk to me! Claire!"
I didn't look back. I slammed the door of the SUV, shut my eyes as the tears finally spilled over my lashes, and told Marcus to drive.
