Chapter 5 - Unholy Alliance

By sunrise, the blizzard had cleared, leaving Vail blanketed in a brilliant, blinding white.

Jason hadn't slept a wink. He sat at the dining table, surrounded by legal documents, financial spreadsheets, and criminal statutes, working alongside my assistant Sarah.

I walked into the room carrying a pot of tea. "You need to go back to Raleigh, Jason. If Donald Vance realizes you've gone off the grid in Colorado, he's going to start liquidating his shell accounts."

Jason looked up, his eyes bloodshot but razor-sharp. "I'm not going anywhere without you and the boys, Claire."

"Excuse me?" I set the teapot down with a sharp clatter. "You don't get to command me anymore, Jason. I run a multi-hundred-million-dollar corporation of my own. I have three children to protect."

"I'm not commanding you," Jason said, standing up and stepping toward me, his hands held up in a gesture of total submission. "I'm begging you. Look at these SEC filings from yesterday afternoon."

He pointed to a document on his laptop screen.

"Donald Vance filed an emergency motion with the Federal Trade Commission yesterday to launch a hostile takeover of Apex Eco-Systems—your company, Claire."

I stared at the screen, my blood turning to ice. "What?"

"Donald knows Apex’s solar-glass patent is about to make Sterling Energy's old tech obsolete," Jason explained. "He’s been secretly buying up your secondary venture capital debt through offshore intermediaries. If he executes that debt-conversion clause on Monday morning, he will strip you of your majority stake in Apex—the exact same way he stripped you of Sterling Energy five years ago."

My breath hitched in my throat. Everything I had built—every late night, every sacrifice, the financial security for my three sons—was in Donald Vance's crosshairs.

"He doesn't know you and I have spoken," I realized, my mind racing. "He thinks I'm still hiding in Colorado, isolated and oblivious."

"And he thinks I'm still the paranoid, bitter ex-husband who hates your guts," Jason added, a dark, dangerous smirk finally playing at the corner of his lips—the look of the ruthless corporate predator he used to be, but this time, aligned entirely in my defense. "Donald set a trap five years ago that destroyed our family. He thinks he's about to finish the job."

"So what's the plan?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"We fly to Raleigh on my private jet today," Jason said cleanly. "We let Donald hold his annual shareholder gala tomorrow night at the Grand Regency Hotel. He thinks he's going to announce the hostile acquisition of Apex and solidify his total control over Sterling Energy."

"And instead?"

Jason looked at me, his dark eyes ablaze with a terrifyingly pure purpose. "Instead, we walk into that ballroom together. You, me, and our legal teams. We expose his fraud, freeze his assets, and tear his empire down to the bedrock."

"And the boys?" I asked, leaning closer.

"They fly with us under private security," Jason promised, stepping right up to me, his voice dropping into a raspy, passionate whisper. "I swear to you on my life, Claire... no one will ever touch those boys. I will burn every dollar I own before I let anyone hurt them or you ever again."

I looked into his eyes, searching for any trace of the arrogant, cold man who had cast me out five years ago. I found only an absolute, desperate devotion.

"Alright, Jason," I said quietly. "Let's go destroy Donald Vance."
