Chapter 9 - The Crown of Mercy

The grand ballroom was so silent you could hear the soft flicker of the candle flames.

Julian looked up at Blanche, taking her pale, scarred hand into his strong, armored gloves. The fierce, terrifying monarch who had just brought a kingdom to its knees was gone; in his eyes lived only the man who loved her with every fiber of his soul.

"One year ago," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall, "the people in this room called you a worthless beggar because you stopped to save a dying woman."

He looked around the room, his blue eyes flashing with righteous authority.

"They threw you out because they believed mercy was a weakness. They believed gold and titles made a person grand. But they were blind."

Julian looked back at Blanche, his smile soft and radiant.

"You saved my grandmother. You gave me back my heart. You showed this kingdom that true majesty is not found in ivory gowns or gold signet rings, but in the courage to love when the world is cold."

He reached into his velvet pouch and withdrew a magnificent, ancient ring—a delicate band carved from star-silver, set with a flawless, brilliant blue diamond that shimmered like the clear morning sky.

"Blanche Fairmont," Julian whispered softly. "Will you do me the ultimate honor of sitting beside me on the throne? Will you be my Queen, my equal, and my heart?"

Blanche felt tears spill over her eyelashes, sparkling like diamonds in the light.

She looked at her mother, who was sobbing silently in the crowd, finally realizing the glorious, gentle soul she had allowed her husband to discard. She looked at the vacant doors where her father and Horus had been dragged away to face justice.

And then she looked at Julian—the man who had seen her at her lowest, who had loved her in her mud-stained gown, and who had given her a purpose greater than she had ever dreamed.

"Yes," Blanche whispered, her voice echoing with pure joy. "Yes, Julian. A thousand times yes."

Julian slid the star-silver ring onto her finger.

He stood up, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her right there before the entire court.

The ballroom erupted into a deafening roar of cheers. General Marcus raised his sword high. "All hail King Julian and Queen Blanche!"

"LONG LIVE THE QUEEN OF MERCY!" the nobles shouted, bowing low, their voices echoing off the vaulted arches into the night.
