Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The guards hesitated, caught between the Duke’s command and the terrifying, absolute authority in Blanche’s eyes.

King Richard leaned forward in his wheelchair, his wheezing breath rattling in his chest. His old, bloodshot eyes stared at the silver brooch pinned over Blanche’s heart.

"Where... where did you get that emblem?" the King gasped out, his voice trembling.

Blanche ignored the King for a moment. She walked slowly down the remaining steps, stopping in the very center of the ballroom floor—the exact spot where three months ago her fiancé had returned her ring and her father had disowned her.

She looked at Horus Winfield.

Horus tried to regain his composure, stepping forward with a sneer, though a bead of cold sweat rolled down his temple. "Blanche, you have truly lost your mind. Returning here in dark clothes like some stage actress? You are a disgraced exile. Leave now before you embarrass yourself further."

"Embarrass myself?" Blanche asked, a faint, razor-thin smile touching her lips. "I am not the one who should be embarrassed tonight, Horus."

She unrolled the first parchment in her hand.

"Lord Horus Winfield," Blanche announced clearly for the entire nobility to hear. "Co-owner of Winfield Maritime. Between the years of 1820 and 1825, your family systematically falsified cargo manifests at the northern ports, smuggling illegal black-market grain while pocketing sixty thousand gold sovereigns in royal tax exemptions."

The ballroom went dead silent.

Horus’s face turned as white as a sheet. "That... that is a lie! Fabricated slander!"

"The original shipping manifests, signed in your father’s own handwriting, were delivered to the High Magistrate two hours ago," Blanche replied calmly. "Along with the confession of your head dockmaster."

Murmurs erupted among the nobles. Lord Vance, father of Clara, immediately snatched his daughter’s arm and yanked her away from Horus as if he were covered in plague.

"And you, Father," Blanche turned her cool, steady gaze toward Duke Albert.

Albert stepped back, his chest heaving, his pride crumbling into panic before the eyes of the entire kingdom. "Blanche... stop this madness at once! I am your father!"

"You were my father until your pride defeated your love," Blanche said, her voice dropping into a quiet, heartbreaking precision that made several noblewomen in the crowd weep quietly. "Three months ago, you stood in a ballroom and decided that my life, my heart, and my mercy were worth less than the opinions of the people in this room."

She held up a second document.

"Duke Albert Fairmont. To secure your political position, you illegally transferred twenty thousand acres of Crown-protected peasant land into private offshore accounts, starving four northern villages to build your personal war chest."

Albert staggered, grabbing the mahogany railing behind him to keep from collapsing. "No... no..."

"You called me a beggar when I saved a dying woman on the road," Blanche said, stepping right up to him, looking deep into his terrified, pale eyes. "But look at you now, Albert Fairmont. You stand in silk, covered in gold, and yet you are the poorest, most bankrupt man in this entire realm."
