Chapter 5 - The Unseen Shadow

For the next two weeks, the capital of Oakhaven was consumed by frantic preparations for the Royal Solstice Gala.
The finest seamstresses worked through the nights, gold leaf was applied to the palace arches, and thousands of barrels of rare wine were imported from the southern provinces. Duke Albert Fairmont walked through the royal corridors with his head held high, bathed in the sycophantic praise of lesser nobles who wished to ride his coattails to power.
Horus Winfield was insufferable. He strutted through the capital’s grand halls, already carrying himself like a king, draped in velvet and precious gems, boasting openly of his upcoming elevation.
No one spoke of Blanche. She had been erased. Her portraits in the Fairmont Manor had been burned, her bedroom cleared, and her name forbidden from being spoken by the servants.
They believed she was dead, or begging in a slum, or rotting in some distant village.
They had no idea that a sleek, unmarked black carriage was entering the city gates under the cover of midnight.
Blanche sat inside the carriage, looking out at the illuminated towers of her former life. She wore a high-collared black cloak hiding a dress that would soon shock the entire realm.
Beside her sat Julian, his broad shoulders filling the carriage space, a leather case resting across his knees containing the ancient, original Royal Edict signed by King Edward IV before his death.
"Are you afraid?" Julian asked softly, reaching out to gently take her hand. His touch was warm, grounding, and instantly dispelled the cold memories of the city.
"No," Blanche said, looking into his eyes. "I used to be afraid every single day of my life. I was afraid of disappointing my father. I was afraid of displeasing Horus. I was afraid of not being quiet enough, gentle enough, perfect enough. But when you have lost everything, you discover that fear is just a shadow."
Julian lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently, his blue eyes fixed on hers. "Tonight, we take back your dignity. And tomorrow, we take back the throne."
"My Lord," the driver called down from the roof. "We have arrived at the secret entrance beneath the royal gardens."
Julian pulled a small, delicate silver brooch from his coat—it was shaped like a phoenix rising from ash, inlaid with rare black diamonds. He leaned forward and pinned it gently over Blanche’s heart.
"This belonged to my mother," Julian whispered. "She wore it on the day she stood before the High Council. Wear it tonight, Blanche. Let them see what true royalty looks like."
Blanche touched the cold silver brooch, feeling the immense weight of history and love behind it. "I will not fail you, Julian."
"You couldn't fail me if you tried," Julian replied softly.

He leaned in, his lips gently brushing against hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with a unspoken promise of a future built together. When he pulled back, Blanche felt as though fire was coursing through her veins.
She pulled her black cowl over her face, stepped out of the carriage, and melted into the shadows of the palace gardens.
