Chapter 3 - The Shadow King

Over the next three months, the girl known as Lady Blanche died, and a formidable woman rose from her ashes.
At Blackwood Manor, Blanche discovered a world completely hidden from the arrogant nobility of the capital. The manor was not merely a house; it was the nerve center of a massive, secret network of scholars, merchants, former soldiers, and spymasters who answered to Martha and Julian.
Every day, Blanche rose at dawn. She did not spend her mornings practicing ballroom etiquette or choosing lace for gloves.
Under Martha’s brilliant tutelage, Blanche studied statecraft, international trade, legal philosophy, and corporate finance. She learned how the kingdom’s grain markets were manipulated by corrupt lords, how Duke Albert hid his debts through offshore shipping companies, and how Horus Winfield’s family bribed royal tax collectors.
She possessed a natural, razor-sharp mind that had been smothered for years by the frivolous expectations of noble society. Now, unfettered, her intellect blossomed brilliantly.
And in the afternoons, she spent her time with Julian.
In the sun-dappled courtyard behind the manor, Julian taught her how to defend herself. He placed a lightweight steel dagger in her hand, teaching her how to shift her weight, parry an attack, and read an opponent’s movements.
"Your father thought he took your power when he took your ring," Julian said one afternoon, standing close behind her, his hands gently guiding her wrists as she held the blade. His chest was warm against her back, his breath tickling her ear, sending a sudden flutter through her veins. "Power isn't given by a piece of gold, Blanche. It is built here." He tapped her temple gently. "And here." He touched the space over her heart.
Blanche turned her head, her face mere inches from his. "And who built your power, Julian? Who are you really?"
Julian’s gaze dropped to her lips before returning to her eyes. The playful air between them vanished, replaced by a dark, heavy gravity.
"My real name is Julian royal-born," he whispered. "My father was King Edward IV. The current king sitting on the throne—King Richard—is my uncle. He murdered my father twenty years ago, poisoned my mother, and seized the crown through blood and terror."
Blanche’s breath hitched. "You... you are the rightful King of Oakhaven."
"I am a man who was raised in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to clean the rot from my home," Julian said, his voice laced with iron determination. "My uncle rules through fear and greed. Dukes like your father and lords like Horus buy their influence while the common people starve on the roads. I do not want the throne for glory, Blanche. I want it so no old woman ever has to die in a muddy ditch while nobles dance in silk gowns."
Blanche looked at him—at the fierce honor burning in his soul, at the deep compassion that mirrored her own, at the strength that had protected her without asking for anything in return.
Without thinking, she reached up and touched his jaw, her rough thumb brushing against his dark stubble. "Then let me help you take it back."
Julian stared at her, his dark eyes ablaze with an emotion so intense it made the air around them feel electric. He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers.
"I was planning to take the kingdom alone, Blanche," Julian whispered, his hand gently cupping the back of her neck. "Now I cannot imagine ruling it without you beside me."

Before Blanche could respond, the heavy iron bell at the manor gate began to ring violently—three sharp, rhythmic strikes.
The signal of an incoming royal emergency.
