Chapter 9 - The Legacy Restored

The grand ballroom of the Ashworth Grand Hotel had been completely restored to its former glory. The enormous gilded mirror against the lobby wall had been replaced with an even more magnificent, custom-made crystal centerpiece, its surface reflecting the light of a thousand candles.

Tonight, the hotel was hosted not for the elite politicians or old-money billionaires, but for the annual Calloway Foundation Gala—a charity event dedicated to providing safe housing, medical care, and legal protection for low-income mothers and working-class families in the city’s slums.

The room was packed with hundreds of guests, but the atmosphere was entirely different from the night of the incident. There was no arrogance, no cruelty, no hushed whispers of disdain. The city’s upper floors had finally learned that under the Calloway rule, dignity was a universal currency.

Standing near the top of the grand marble staircase, Royce Calloway stood tall and proud, dressed in a flawless midnight-blue tuxedo. Beside him stood Della, looking breathtakingly beautiful in a flowing, elegant white silk maternity gown that accentuated her prominent eight-month-old pregnant form. A collar of flawless, simple pearls rested against her throat, and her amber hair was pinned back with a diamond hairpiece that caught the light with every movement.

Silas stepped up to the microphone on the central stage, his voice echoing clearly through the ballroom. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we are honored to announce the opening of the Marsh Sanctuary—a network of twenty new maternal care centers across the state, fully funded by the Calloway corporation. And now, please welcome the new chairperson of the foundation... Mrs. Della Calloway."

The ballroom erupted into a deafening, standing ovation. Guests clapped fiercely, their faces filled with a profound respect as Della stepped forward, her hand resting comfortably over her stomach, a radiant, confident smile illuminating her beautiful face.

She spoke with a grace and eloquence that completely captivated the room, sharing her own story of struggle, survival, and the profound importance of extending a helping hand to those who are invisible to society.

As she finished her speech and walked back toward the staircase, Royce stepped forward, taking her hand and lifting it to his lips, kissing the crescent scar with an open, unashamed reverence that made the entire crowd smile.

"You were magnificent, my queen," Royce whispered against her ear, his arm sliding around her waist to support her as they walked down the steps together.

"I had a very good teacher," Della smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as they moved through the crowd of cheering guests. The small apartment in the East Ward, the cracked phone screens, the overdue rent notices, and the cruel words of Cordelia Vance were nothing but distant, faded shadows now. They had rewritten the rules of the city, and their legacy of protection had just begun.
