Chapter 7 - The Trial in the Shadows

The basement of the abandoned Calloway shipping warehouse in the North Docks was cold, damp, and smelled heavily of rust and stagnant seawater. A single, harsh halogen bulb hung from the ceiling, casting long, grim shadows across the concrete floor.
Bound tightly to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room was Marcus Maroni, his wounds crudely bandaged by a Calloway medic just to keep him awake. Sitting in a smaller chair beside him, her hands tied behind her back, her expensive makeup smeared with tears and sweat, was Cordelia Vance. She was shaking violently, her pride completely shattered by the reality of the underworld she had tried to manipulate.
The heavy iron door groaned open, and Royce Calloway walked in.
He had changed into a clean black suit, his left arm supported by a sleek, dark silk sling, though his posture remained completely unyielding. Behind him stood Silas, carrying a heavy leather case containing various surgical instruments.
"Royce! Please!" Cordelia screamed, her voice cracking with terror as he approached. "It wasn't my idea! It was Marcus! He told me he wanted to eliminate you to take over the docks! I was just a pawn, I swear! My family is broke, we have nothing left!"
Royce didn't even look at her. He walked straight to Marcus Maroni, stopping just inches from the bleeding gangster.
"Who gave you the timing for the clinic visit, Marcus?" Royce asked, his voice deathly quiet, carrying the chilling finality of an executioner.
Marcus spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, a defiant, ragged laugh escaping his lips. "Go to hell, Calloway. The Maroni family doesn't talk to rats. Kill me if you want, but my brothers will finish the job. That little waitress of yours is a marked woman."
Royce nodded slowly, his expression remaining a mask of absolute stone. He turned to Silas. "Call Don Maroni on the private line."
Silas dialed a number on a secure satellite phone and held it up to Royce’s ear.
"Don Maroni," Royce said flatly into the receiver. "Your younger brother Marcus just tried to assassinate the woman who saved my life five years ago. He used six of your soldiers and a military-grade box truck in the middle of the financial district."
The voice on the other end of the line was old, raspy, and filled with an immediate, deep panic. "Royce... listen to me. Marcus acted alone. He’s an idiot who wanted to prove himself. The Maroni family wants no war with the Calloways. We respect your territory."
"Then you will prove it," Royce said coldly. "I am sending Marcus back to you in a pine box. In exchange, you will hand over every asset your family owns in the Northern sector by midnight tonight. If a single Maroni soldier steps foot south of the river again, I will personally burn your family’s compound to the ground with everyone inside."
The old don paused for a long, agonizing five seconds before responding. "Agreed. Do what you must with Marcus. The Northern sector is yours."
The line went dead. Marcus Maroni’s face went completely white as he realized his own brother had traded his life for corporate territory.
Royce finally turned his ice-blue eyes toward Cordelia Vance. The sheer, suffocating terror in his gaze made her lose her breath completely.

"As for you, Cordelia," Royce whispered, stepping closer until his shadow covered her entirely. "You think your money made you special. You think you could treat a pregnant woman like trash because of your family name. Your family has no name anymore. Silas, hand her over to the federal authorities along with the records of the Switzerland accounts she used to fund this hit. She will spend the next forty years in a federal women’s penitentiary, wearing a grey jumpsuit and scrubbing the floors just like the servants she despised."
"No! No!" Cordelia shrieked as Silas dragged her out of the chair, her expensive shoes scraping uselessly against the concrete floor as she was led away into the dark.
