Chapter 10 - The Bloom of Tomorrow

A bright, warm spring afternoon broke over the hills of the Iron Sanctuary. The bitter winter snow had completely melted away, replaced by sweeping lawns of vibrant green grass and rows of beautiful, blooming white and blue hydrangeas along the stone paths.

The sound of a soft, rhythmic lullaby drifted from the open glass doors of the master sunroom.

Inside, a massive wooden rocking chair sat by the window, catching the warm gold rays of the afternoon sun. Della sat in the chair, wearing a soft, comfortable white linen dress. Cradled securely against her chest was a beautiful, healthy three-week-old baby boy. He had a thick shock of dark hair, a perfectly round face, and when his tiny eyelids flickered open, a pair of deep, piercing ice-blue eyes looked up at her with an absolute, innocent peace.

"You're a perfect little prince, Ethan," Della whispered, her finger gently tracing the soft skin of her son’s cheek.

The glass doors slid open quietly, and Royce walked in. He had completely discarded his corporate suit, wearing only a casual dark shirt and jeans. He walked slowly across the room, his eyes fixed on the mother and child with an expression of pure, unadulterated love that had completely replaced the cold predator of the past.

He knelt down beside the rocking chair, his large, warm hand gently cupping the back of his son’s tiny head. Ethan let out a small, contented coo, his tiny fingers reaching out to instinctively wrap around his father’s index finger, anchoring himself to the powerful man.

"He looks just like you, Royce," Della smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as he kissed her forehead.

"He has his mother’s heart, Della," Royce said softly, his voice rich and thick with emotion. "And that means he will be the greatest king this city has ever seen."

He stood up, pulling Della gently out of the chair and into his arms, holding both his wife and his new son against his broad chest as they looked out the grand window at the beautiful, peaceful city below.

The underworld was quiet. The empire was secure. The rainy night in the alley five years ago had led them through a storm of blood, glass, and fire, but they had survived it all. They had found their sanctuary, built their kingdom on truth and loyalty, and today, under the brilliant gold light of a new tomorrow, their love would bloom for the rest of their days.
