Chapter 2 - The Contract of Protection

Della woke to the soft, rhythmic ticking of a wall clock. The blinding glare of the afternoon sun was filtered through heavy, dark velvet curtains that she knew didn't belong in a standard city hospital room. She blinked, her left hand moving automatically to her stomach, letting out a long, ragged breath of relief when she felt the steady, reassuring kick of her baby from within.
"You're safe, little one," she whispered, her voice raspy and dry.
"He’s right. The baby is perfectly healthy," a deep, rich voice responded from the shadows near the corner armchair.
Della gasped, her head snapping around. Sitting in the dim light was the man from the hotel lobby—the tall, imposing figure who had caught her before she hit the marble floor. Up close, without the chaos of the shattering glass, he looked even more intimidating. His tailored black suit screamed immense wealth, but the raw, lethal edge to his posture spoke of a man who dealt in a far more dangerous currency than money.
"Mr... Calloway, right?" Della stammered, pulling the heavy white duvet up to her chin, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I... I don't know how to thank you for stepping in. And I’m so sorry about the mirror. I know the Ashworth Grand is an expensive place, and the manager told me the decorations are historical. I don't have the money to pay for the damage right now, but if you deduct it from my future shifts—"
"Stop," Royce interrupted gently, standing up and walking to the bedside. He didn't look like a ruthless mafia boss now; his expression was filled with an intense, quiet reverence that deeply confused her. "You will never work another shift at the Ashworth Grand, Della. And you do not owe me a single cent."
Della’s heart dropped into her stomach. Her fingers gripped the bedsheets tightly. "I'm fired? Please, Mr. Calloway, I need that job. I’m five months pregnant, my rent in the East Ward is overdue, and no one else will hire a pregnant waitress. If Mrs. Petrova told you I was clumsy, I swear the woman in the red dress shoved me—"
"Della, look at me," Royce said, kneeling beside her bed so he was at eye level with her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering her bandaged knuckles with an incredible tenderness that sent a strange, electric shiver down her spine. "You aren't fired. You own the restaurant if you want it. The woman who shoved you, Cordelia Vance, will never step foot in this city again without feeling the weight of what she did to you."
Della blinked, her amber eyes wide with confusion. "I don't understand. Why are you doing this for me? I’m just a temporary staff member. You don't even know me."
Royce looked down at her bandaged hand, his thumb gently tracing the edge of the gauze where he knew the crescent scar lay hidden. "You don't recognize me, do you?"
Della searched his face—the sharp, aristocratic nose, the high cheekbones, the piercing ice-blue eyes, and the dark dragon tattoo crawling up his neck. A faint, distant memory flickered in the back of her mind—a rainy night, a man covered in mud and blood collapsing on her kitchen floor, his eyes the exact same terrifying, beautiful blue. But that man had been wearing rags, his face beaten beyond recognition.
"The alley..." she whispered, her breath catching in her throat. "Five years ago... in the North Docks?"
"You saved my life, Della," Royce said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that vibrated with absolute sincerity. "You hid a monster in your home and took a knife to the hand to protect him. I’ve been looking for you for five years. And now that I’ve found you, I am never letting anyone hurt you again."
He stood up, pulling a legal document from his pocket and laying it on her lap.
"This is a contract of absolute protection," Royce stated firmly. "You are moving out of the East Ward tonight. My personal security detail will escort you to my private estate in the hills. You will have the best doctors, the best care, and every luxury this city can buy. In exchange, you will let me be the shield between you and the people who think they can treat you like dirt."
May you like
Della looked at the document, then up at the dangerous man standing over her. "And the father of my baby... he left me the moment he found out I was pregnant. I’m completely alone, Mr. Calloway. Why would a man like you want to burden himself with a broken woman and another man's child?"
Royce’s eyes darkened with a possessive, unyielding intensity that made her breath hitch. "The moment you opened that door for me five years ago, your burdens became mine. And as for the child... any child born from the woman who saved my life will be treated as royalty in the Calloway empire. Sign the paper, Della. Let me take care of you."
