Chapter 10 - SANCTUARY

Six months later.

Spring had returned to the city, painting the park trees in vibrant shades of green and pink.

Down on the ground floor of Leles, the Friday night dinner rush was in full, glorious swing. The crystal chandeliers gleamed brightly, reflecting off pristine white tablecloths, while the soft, romantic notes of a live jazz trio filled the air.

The floor was spotless. The imported Italian marble near the back corner booth shone like a dark, polished mirror, completely devoid of any trace of the violent night that had unfolded months ago.

On the mezzanine high above the room, Lorenzo Costa stood at the brass railing.

He wore a tailored dark charcoal suit, his hand resting lightly against the metalwork. But he no longer looked like a lonely monarch vigilant against assassins. His posture was relaxed, his face softened by a quiet, profound contentment.

The heavy oak door behind him opened quietly.

Clara stepped out onto the mezzanine balcony. She wore an elegant floor-length emerald silk gown that highlighted every soft curve of her body. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves over one shoulder, and her skin was radiant, smooth, and completely unblemished.

In her hand, she carried two glasses of deep red vintage Barolo.

She walked over to Lorenzo, sliding her free arm through his as she leaned her head gently against his shoulder.

"The head chef says the white truffle shipment from Piedmont just arrived," Clara said, her voice rich, playful, and full of life. "He wants you to approve the menu for tomorrow's charity gala."

Lorenzo smiled, taking one of the wine glasses from her hand. He didn't look down at the floor; he looked at her face, admiring the warmth in her dark eyes.

"The chef knows what he's doing," Lorenzo said softly. "I am more interested in my wife’s opinion."

Clara laughed—a beautiful, clear sound that carried lightly over the soft jazz below. She lifted her glass toward him.

"To new beginnings," she said.

"To sanctuary," Lorenzo corrected gently, clinking his glass against hers.

Down below, the wealthy patrons dined in comfort, entirely unaware of the dark iron fist that protected the peace of the house. They saw only a powerful man and his stunning wife standing together on the high balcony, looking down over their kingdom.

Lorenzo wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her close as they took a sip of the rich wine together. The world outside remained complex, cold, and unpredictable, but inside Leles, high up on the mezzanine, the blood had been washed away, leaving behind a love forged in fire and built to last a lifetime.
