Chapter 5 - THE DAWN OF THE COSTA

"DOWN!" Lorenzo roared.
In a split second, his arm swept around Clara’s waist, dragging her small body tightly against his chest as he threw both of them onto the stone patio beneath the overhang of the grand entrance.
Chaos erupted across the courtyard.
Muzzle flashes strobed from the dark treeline as sniper fire ripped into the stone pillars of the villa. Vincent and four estate guards drew their weapons instantly, returning a terrifying barrage of automatic fire into the woods, the thunderous reports shattering the night air.
"SNIPER AT THREE O'CLOCK!" Vincent yelled over the roar of gunfire, crouching behind the hood of the armored sedan as bullets sparked against the heavy metal. "BOSS, GET HER INSIDE!"
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. Keeping his body positioned entirely between Clara and the treeline, he hauled her to her feet and shoved her through the heavy mahogany front doors of the villa as an estate guard slammed them shut and threw the heavy iron bolt into place.
Inside, the villa was a fortress of marble and quiet security. High arched ceilings and warm oil paintings lined the foyer, but Lorenzo paid them no mind.
He gripped Clara by the shoulders, his eyes scanning her frantically from head to toe. "Are you hit? Look at me, Clara—did a bullet catch you?"
Clara was panting, her hands clutching his arms, her heart hammering against her ribs like a wild drum. "No... no, I'm okay. Are you?"
"I'm fine," Lorenzo growled.
He turned toward the head of his estate security, a grizzled old veteran named Mateo who had rushed into the foyer holding an assault rifle.
"Marco Vane has lost his mind," Lorenzo spat, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fury. "He followed us to the estate. He brought snipers onto Costa land."
"The perimeter team is flushing them out right now, Boss," Mateo reported briskly. "Vincent says they've already eliminated two of the shooters in the woods. It wasn't a full assault—it was a hit squad meant to catch you on the steps."
Lorenzo took a deep, steadying breath. The cold, controlled rage that had been building inside him since he first saw Richard hit Clara at Leles finally crystallized into absolute, uncompromising purpose.
He turned back to Clara. She was trembling, the shock of the ambush finally catching up to her bruised, exhausted body. Without a word, Lorenzo reached out, took her hand, and led her up the grand winding staircase to the master suite on the second floor.
He brought her into his private quarters—a massive room featuring a stone fireplace where a low fire burned, a velvet-covered bed, and tall windows protected by heavy iron shutters.
He guided her to a plush velvet armchair near the fire, lowering her gently into it. He knelt on one knee before her, removing her worn shoes with meticulous care, his large hands surprisingly gentle as he set them aside.
"This ends tonight," Lorenzo said softly, looking up into her dark eyes. "Marco Vane tried to take your life, and he tried to take mine under my own roof. There will be no more negotiations. No more truces."
Clara reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched his cheek, feeling the rough stubble against her palm. "Lorenzo... he has an army in the North District. If you go after him—"
"I have the entire city, Clara," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, resonant promise. "Marco Vane thought he was dealing with a businessman who runs a restaurant. He forgot who I am. He forgot that the Costa family built this city on the bones of men who thought like him."
He stood up, pulled his phone from his pocket, and dialed a number.
"Vincent," Lorenzo commanded as soon as the line connected. "Call a meeting of the five families. Tell them Marco Vane broke the accord by putting a hit squad on my estate. Tell them I am invoking the Blood Clause. By sunrise, the Vane name will no longer exist in this city."
He ended the call, set the phone on the mantelpiece, and looked back down at Clara.
For the first time all night, Clara felt the heavy, suffocating weight of fear lift from her chest. Looking at Lorenzo—this dark, dangerous man who had shattered an entire syndicate's rule simply because he refused to let her be broken—she realized she was no longer a victim trapped in the shadows of the North District.
She reached out her hand to him. "Stay with me," she whispered softly. "Until the sun comes up."
Lorenzo looked at her hand, then walked over and sat on the edge of the hearth beside her chair. He took her hand in his, holding it tightly against his knee, his thumb tracing smooth circles over her skin.

"I'm not going anywhere, Clara," Lorenzo promised, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a warmth that burned away the cold ghosts of her past. "Your war is over. Mine is just beginning... and when the dust settles, you will never have to run again."
Outside, the gunfire in the woods faded into silence as the Costa guards secured the perimeter. Inside, beside the warm embers of the hearth, Clara closed her eyes, resting her head against the high velvet back of the chair, knowing for the very first time in her life that she was completely, irrevocably safe.
