Chapter 6 - THE WAR CABINET

The velvet curtains of Lorenzo’s study in the villa were drawn tight against the gray light of the fast-approaching dawn. The room smelled of thick cigar smoke, black coffee, and the sharp, metallic tang of gun oil.

Around the heavy mahogany conference table sat four men who effectively governed the city’s underground hierarchy: the dons of the Allied Families. They were men of power, aged in violence, who usually spoke in whispered threats. But tonight, the tension in the room was palpable.

Lorenzo stood at the head of the table, his hands resting heavily on the dark wood. His suit jacket was off, his crisp white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos that told the story of his rise through the Costa syndicate.

"Marco Vane crossed a line that protects every man in this room," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly timbre that commanded total silence. "He brought snipers to my home. He fired upon my estate while I had a guest under my roof."

Don Carmine, an elder boss with silver hair and razor-sharp eyes, leaned forward, tapping the ash from his cigar into a crystal tray. "We heard about the girl, Lorenzo. Richard Vane is Marco’s blood. He’s claiming you crippled his nephew over a personal grievance—a street girl who belonged to his crew."

Lorenzo’s eyes locked onto Don Carmine with a lethal intensity. "She is not a street girl. She is under the personal protection of the Costa family. And Richard Vane did not engage in business; he acted like an unsanctioned animal on my property."

He slammed a thick manila folder onto the center of the table.

"These are the financial records of Marco Vane’s side operations," Lorenzo continued calmly. "For two years, he has been skimming from the shared transit routes in the North District. He lied to the council about his margins and used the stolen capital to buy heavy weaponry from outer-state cartels. He was preparing to move on all of us."

The dons leaned in, flipping through the ledger pages. Whispers flared around the table like dry brush catching fire. The narrative shifted instantly—from a personal dispute over a woman to an existential threat against the entire syndicate's balance of power.

"He tried to kill me tonight because I discovered the truth," Lorenzo lied smoothly, integrating Clara’s plight seamlessly into the larger narrative of betrayal. "He knew if Clara Ross remained under my roof, she would confirm how he used her father’s debt to launder illegal holdings through northern front businesses."

Don Carmine closed the folder with a heavy thud. He looked up at Lorenzo and nodded slowly. "The Blood Clause is granted, Lorenzo. Marco Vane has forfeited his seat. Clean the North District before the sun sets tomorrow. But leave no mess for the federal authorities."

"There will be no mess," Lorenzo replied flatly. "Only an vacant chair."

As the dons filed out of the study, Vincent stepped into the room from the side door. He carried a fresh glass of water and a small velvet box containing prescribed antiseptics.

"How is she?" Lorenzo asked immediately, the cold edge in his voice softening the moment he spoke of Clara.

"She didn't sleep, Boss," Vincent reported quietly. "She stayed by the window in the master bedroom the entire night. The house physician checked her cheek—no broken bones, but the swelling is severe. She asked for you."

Lorenzo took a slow, deep breath, feeling the heavy exhaustion of the night catching up to his shoulders. "Tell the strike teams to assemble at the docks by three in the afternoon. I am going upstairs."
