Chapter 7 - FRAGILE TRUST

Lorenzo pushed open the heavy oak door to his master suite.

Clara was sitting on the wide window sill, wrapped in a plush cream-colored robe that trailed onto the polished floorboards. She was staring out at the mist rolling over the estate gardens. When the latch clicked, she flinched slightly before recognizing his tall silhouette in the doorway.

"You're back," she murmured.

Lorenzo walked softly across the room, stopping a respectful distance away. In the dim morning light, the deep purple bruising across her cheek and eye looked heartbreakingly tender against her pale skin.

"The council has spoken," Lorenzo said softly. "The city understands the truth now. Marco Vane stands alone."

Clara turned her head toward him. Her dark eye searched his face, taking in the tired lines around his eyes and the steady, unwavering authority he projected.

"I heard the cars leaving," she whispered. "I heard men talking about blood clauses and purges. Lorenzo... you are escalating a war for a woman you found bleeding on your floor twelve hours ago. Why?"

Lorenzo stepped closer, sinking onto his knees beside her window seat so that his eyes were level with hers. He reached up slowly, giving her ample time to draw back, but she stayed still as his warm, calloused thumb gently brushed the edge of her uninjured jawline.

"When I was twenty-one," Lorenzo began, his voice dropping into a rare moment of personal vulnerability, "my father was betrayed by his closest lieutenant. They dragged him into the street in front of our old house. I watched from an upper window, paralyzed by fear. I did nothing. I was a child, but I promised myself that day that I would never again stand by while an innocent was brutalized under my watch."

He looked directly into her eyes, his thumb gently smoothing her soft skin.

"When I looked down from that mezzanine at Leles, I didn't see a helpless victim, Clara. I saw someone holding onto her dignity while surrounded by monsters. Protecting you isn't a chore. It is the only noble thing I have done in ten years."

Clara felt a lump form in her throat. For years, men had looked at her with greed, pity, or cruel indifference. Nobody had ever looked at her as if she possessed an untouchable strength.

She reached out, her small, cool fingers wrapping around his wrist. She pressed her cheek slightly into his palm, closing her eyes as tears finally broke past her defense and slipped down her bruised face.

"I don't know how to exist in a world where I don't have to look over my shoulder," she sobbed softly, the weight of years of terror collapsing all at once.

"You don't have to know yet," Lorenzo murmured, moving closer and wrapping his powerful arms around her, pulling her small frame against his chest. "I will carry the weight until you learn to stand without fear."

She buried her face in his shoulder, her hands clutching his shirt as he held her through the quiet dawn, shielding her from the storm that was about to break over the city.
